Joshua Carlos Ovalles, Already A Suspect In January Shooting, Charged In Death Of Vaughn Kemp

WILKES-BARRE — A 19-year-old man police identified Wednesday as the suspect in the deadly shooting Sunday morning was free on bail when he attempted to kill another man earlier this year.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Joshua Carlos Ovalles, of Kent Lane, Wilkes-Barre, charging him in the slaying of Vaughn Kemp, 24, outside 174 S. Grant St. Ovalles was still at large Wednesday night.

Witnesses told police Ovalles and Kemp were arguing in front of the house when Ovalles fired several rounds, according to the criminal complaint.

An autopsy revealed Kemp died from multiple gunshot wounds.  He became the sixth homicide victim within the city limits this year.

Arrest Warrant Issued In Wilkes-Barre Homicide

WILKES-BARRE – An arrest warrant was issued for Joshua Carlos Ovalles, 19, of Kent Lane, Wilkes-Barre, charging him with the deadly shooting of Vaughn Kemp early Sunday morning.

Kemp, 24, of Park Avenue, Wilkes-Barre, was shot multiple times at 174 S. Grant St. at about 1:20 a.m.  He died at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township.

The criminal complaint filed today charges Ovalles with criminal homicide, alleging he was involved in an argument with Kemp prior to the shooting.

Wilkes-Barre Police Deal With Wild Weekend

WILKES-BARRE — City police remained busy Monday after a violent weekend that involved a deadly shooting, a crash involving an officer, an arrest of a man who allegedly carjacked a cab at gunpoint and a burglary in which a suspect put a knife to the victim’s throat.

• Police released no new details Monday of a fatal shooting behind 174 S. Grant St. early Sunday morning.

An autopsy performed by forensic pathologist Dr. Gary Ross determined Vaughn Kemp, 24, of Park Avenue, suffered multiple gunshot wounds.  Kemp’s death was ruled a homicide.  Kemp was attending a party when he was gunned down at about 1:20 a.m.  No arrest has been made.

Man Killed In Wilkes-Barre Shooting

A party at 174 S. Grant St. in Wilkes-Barre came to an abrupt halt around 1:20 a.m. Sunday when shooting resulted in the death of a 24-year-old in the backyard.

Police were called to the house on a report of a “large fight with shots fired” and found Vaughn Kemp lying motionless in the backyard.

Kemp, a black man who lived a few blocks away on Park Avenue, was transported to Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center in Plains Township, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy concluded Kemp died from multiple gunshot wounds, said Luzerne County Deputy Coroner Dan Hughes.
