WILKES-BARRE, PA — The proposed $100,000 worth of security improvements at the troubled Sherman Hills apartments are underway with the installation of a fence around the property.

Security consultant John Daly said work began last week.

“They’re putting up a 1-inch mesh fence like they proposed earlier and will move on to the next phase,” said of the McLane Investigative Group of New York City.

The possibility of losing the nearly $2 million in rent subsidies by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development prompted the owner Sherman Hills Realty of Brooklyn, N.Y. to promise changes at the complex that has been the scene of drug arrests, violent crimes and a fatal shooting last November.

Bethlehem Developer Gets First Approval For South Side Complex

A developer looking to build stores, offices and apartments across from the former Bethlehem Steel Corp. site got its first green light from Bethlehem officials today.

BethWorks Renovations needed the Bethlehem Planning Commission’s permission to build its proposed 111 apartments in two buildings, instead of three as originally proposed.

All three buildings were originally slated to host a mix of retail, offices and apartments, but company officials have since decided it would make more sense to separate the offices and apartments, said BethWorks’ Rob de Beer. All three buildings will still have retail space on the first floor.

BethWorks, which is co-owned by lawyer Michael Perrucci, is permitted to build up to 115 apartments on the three lots but needed variance approval to have them only in two buildings, de Beer said.

Senior Housing Proposed For Pottstown Riverfront

Location of Pottstown in Montgomery County

Image via Wikipedia

Evan Brandt wrote an article in today’s Mercury about a proposal from a developer to build senior housing along Industrial Highway at Evans Street.

IMHO (and I always have one) there are certainly better things to build along the riverfront than senior housing.  Why are we not looking at places like Manayunk for inspiration??? http://www.manayunk.com/

The reasons given for being excited about this proposal make no sense.  Seniors on fixed incomes are not going to help revitalize downtown Pottstown.  If that were the case Smith & Sydney Pollock Towers would have already made an impact as they are on High Street.

If we want Pottstown to be a destination, then we need to think along the lines of Manayunk, not Sun City http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sun_City,_Arizona

Great project, wrong location.  We oppose.

Interesting Website For Those Concerned About Revitalization

The website link below is a wealth of information and resources about urban renewal, smart growth, urban planning, sustainable communities, economic development etc… that can be applied right here in Pottstown.  Some Code Blue peeps are attending the Building One Pennsylvania event in Lancaster today.  This would be a great group to network with!  Good things are happening north of Pottstown that are worth emulating IMHO.

Another Example Of Brownfield Reclamation!

This is another great example of what could happen here in Pottstown.  I am hopeful that the new economic development coalition will consider projects like this!
