From Beers To Burritos, Cinco De Mayo A Big Boost For Restaurant Owners In York County

Cinco de Mayo may be a relatively minor holiday in Mexico. But for restaurants in York County, the holiday is a big boost to the bottom line.

El Serrano’s two locations in Springettsbury Township and Lancaster, for example, are expected to do three to four times the business they do on a typical Tuesday, said Melanie Torres, who manages the Lancaster location.

Mexitaly, a Springettsbury Township eatery whose menu features Mexican food, pizza and craft beer made on the premises, is bringing in extra help for Cinco de Mayo and ordering 20 percent more food ingredients than usual, owner Greg Skirboll said.

Snow Tonight? Uh, Really???

Must have been a lot of grousing this morning by local schoolkids unhappy to wake up and see … nothing.

No snow.

Forecasts of two to six inches of snow for Philadelphia and its suburbs proved closer to scoops of pixie dust than blankets of sleddable crystals.

The word snow failed to even get a mention in the hourly reports overnight for airports in Lancaster, Pottstown, Philadelphia and Mount Holly.

Good thing forecasters restrained themselves from citing a computer model that predicted 15 inches of snow, said Anthony Gigi, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

Hanover Based Utz Quality Foods Celebrates 90th Anniversary By Giving Away $90,000

It is always gratifying to see corporations who remember their roots and care for the communities that helped make them what they are.  Utz Quality Foods, maker of Utz Potato Chips, is celebrating their 90^th anniversary and gave away $90,000 to nine Hanover organizations as a way to pay it forward in their community.

Tuesday afternoon, the representatives of the nine organizations gathered at Utz headquarters in Hanover to receive their checks and accept thanks from the Utz family for helping make their business the success it is today.  Utz is the largest independently owned and family owned snack manufacturer in the country.

The following organizations each received $10,000:

Hanover Area Family YMCA, the YWCA of Hanover, Adams-Hanover Counseling Services, the Visiting Nurse Association of Hanover and Spring Grove, UCP of South Central Pennsylvania, “Sweet Charities” cancer patient fund, Saint Matthew Lutheran Church organ fund, the Hanover Soccer Club and the Hanover Area Council of Churches.
