SHICKSHINNY, PA — Amy Evans, a resident of Sugar Notch and part-time secretary-treasurer of Briar Creek Borough, accepted a similar position with Shickshinny on Thursday night after council voted 3-2 to offer her the post that became open with the resignation of Wendy Kramer.

The vote followed the majority-minority line on council. Rosalie Whitebread, chairperson; Michael Steeber and Jim Wido voted to retain Evans. Councilman Kevin Morris and Councilwoman Kathleen Llewellyn voted no.

Steeber called Evans “the most qualified person” to apply for the job. He said Evans during the interview process requested a salary of $17 per hour.

“In light of her experience and her ability to take over the job right now, we believe her salary request is reasonable,” Steeber said.

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Bitter differences between Shickshinny Mayor Beverly Moore have spilled over from the council room to the courtroom.

Following January’s dismissal of borough police officer Brian Morris, Moore on Wednesday filed suit against the borough and several officials, alleging a pattern of behavior including secret meetings, being denied access to municipal offices and being forced to file right-to-know requests to see borough documents.

Moore, who was first elected to the post in 1997, also named as defendants council members Michael Steeber, James Wido, and Roselee Whitbread and secretary Wendy Kramer, according to documents filed in Luzerne County Court.

Her suit describes some of the battles that have roiled the waters at council meetings for more than a year.

SHICKSHINNY — Authorities searching for a wanted man said they uncovered a methamphetamine laboratory in the basement of a Glen Avenue house, the second discovery of a meth operation in the tiny borough in a week.

Police said a large amount of methamphetamine was being cooked inside 10 Glen Ave., where two teenagers were residing with Victoria Ann Maslar, 42, and her husband, David Maslar, 53, on Thursday.

The discovery was made when authorities went to the Maslar household searching for a fugitive.

It was the second meth discovery in the borough in four days, prompting a plea for help from Shickshinny officials.
