Woman Killed, Man Burned In 2-Alarm House Fire In Northern Lancaster County

An elderly woman was killed and an elderly man burned in a two-alarm fire that destroyed a home in northern Lancaster County Friday morning, officials reported.

A person had been reportedly trapped in the 12:30 fully-involved blaze at 1280 Texter Mountain Road in Reinholds, West Cocalico Township, a county dispatch supervisor said.

An 87-year-old woman died in the fire, an investigator said.

Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Robert Granzow pronounced her dead at the scene. County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni said an external exam of her body will be done later Friday morning.

2-Alarm Fire Destroys $1 Million House In Northern Lancaster County

A 2-alarm fire destroyed a $1 million home under construction in East Cocalico Township Thursday morning, fire officials said.

The owner/founder of Four Seasons Produce, David Hollinger, and his wife, Debbie, had planned to move into the largely-finished, 6,600-square-foot home in September.

Neighbors reported the 3:30 a.m. blaze at 755 White Oak Road.

Wailing fire engine sirens woke members of the Hollingers’ two children’s families who live nearby.

Fulton Financial To Cut 14 Branches, Including 1 In Lancaster County

Fulton Financial is closing 14 branches, including one in Lancaster County, as part of a cost-cutting program worth $8 million annually.

The action was disclosed Wednesday by E. Philip Wenger, chairman, president and chief executive officer.

Wenger spoke during a conference call to discuss Fulton’s fourth-quarter and 2013 results with analysts who follow the firm.

Fulton is closing six branches in Pennsylvania, five in Maryland and three in New Jersey by the end of the second quarter.

Drought Relief In Somalia

Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and other countries in the Horn of Africa and the East Africa region are experiencing the worst drought in 60 years. Two years of sporadic rain – and the driest year since 1951 – have resulted in severely reduced access to drinking water and major crop and livestock loss. The UN estimates that 11.6 million people are at risk, including 2.2 million malnourished children. 500,000 of these children face imminent life-threatening conditions. In hard hit areas, like South Central Somalia, masses of people are leaving their homes in order to meet their basic need of food and water.
