POTTSTOWN, PA – The 2016 Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the Arts is a $10,000 scholarship designed to financially assist a local high school senior from Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J. Roberts or The Hill School in obtaining a degree from accredited academic institutions of higher learning for study in the arts. ArtFusion 19464 is proud to partner for the fifth year with the Foundation to present this scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded based on two criteria:  artistic performance as displayed at the Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship Art Exhibit at ArtFusion 19464, and an essay on why the applicant wants to continue their education in the arts.  The applicant’s intended field of study must include a major or a minor in an arts-related field.

The 2016 applicants are: Leila Atoo (Pottstown), Aslan Berbaum (Pottsgrove), Bryan James Collins (Pottsgrove), Zachary Eric Foreman (Owen J. Roberts), Alexandria Gallion (Pottsgrove), and Madison Schaeffer (Owen J. Roberts).

The scholarship will be awarded at a ceremony at ArtFusion 19464 on Saturday, May 21 at 1pm. The ceremony is open to the public. The candidates’ artwork, along with artwork by other local high school students, will be on display in the ArtFusion main gallery until June 4.

Pottstown, PA – On Saturday, May 16, the Greater Pottstown Foundation, in partnership with ArtFusion 19464, announced the winner of the Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the Arts. The $10,000 scholarship was awarded to Owen J. Roberts senior Jennifer Miller. Jennifer will be attending the Arts University of Bournemouth in England to study costume design. The three scholarship judges were impressed not only with her artwork submissions, which included a fanciful Mardi Gras-inspired costume, but also with the dedication and drive demonstrated in her written essay.

This was the fifth year for the scholarship event, a partnership between ArtFusion 19464 and the Foundation. The 2015 applicants were Sarah Berkey, Julianna Clark, Jennifer Miller, Donna Oyella, and Lexi Rodriguez.  The artwork submitted by each contestant, along with other artwork from underclassmen at Owen J. Roberts and Pottsgrove High Schools, will be on view in the ArtFusion gallery through May 30. Normal gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. ArtFusion is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Teen Artists Compete For $10,000 Arts Scholarship

The scholarship is awarded based on two criteria. The students must first write an essay on why they want to continue their education in the arts. Then the students create three pieces of art to be displayed at the Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship Art Exhibit at ArtFusion 19464. Also on display during the exhibit will be work from other students at the participating schools.

Students from Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J. Roberts and the Hill School were eligible to apply. The 2015 applicants are Sarah Berkey, Tessa Bridges, Julianna Clark, Tyesha Lewis, Jennifer Miller, Ben Mizic, Alyssa Ott, Donna Oyella, Lexi Rodriguez, and Luke Steltz.

The show will run from May 16 through May 30 and can be seen any time during normal gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. ArtFusion is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Pottsgrove Football Team Volunteer Was 1 Of 2 Shooting Victims

Washington Township, PA – State police are investigating the deaths of two young men whose bodies were found early Friday in the front seat of a car parked in an isolated wooded area near Barto.

Both appear to have died of gunshot wounds, police said.

One of the men found, Stephen Mixon, 27, of Walnut Ridge in Lower Pottsgrove, was a volunteer coach with the Pottsgrove High School football team and the retail manager of the Schuylkill Valley Sports store in Audubon.

The other man in the car was Joseph McCullough, 20, of Eighth Street in Pottstown.

Opposition Builds To Library Funding Cut By Lower Pottsgrove Township

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, PA — The township commissioners’ decision to reconsider its 2014 funding for the Pottstown Regional Public Library has resulted in a swelling of support for the library and a number of efforts to keep the funding intact.

Earlier this month when the Board of Commissioners reorganized, the new majority announced its intention to open up the 2014 budget adopted one month earlier and reduce funding to the Pottstown Regional Public Library on High Street.

Paradoxically, in December, Lower Pottsgrove had joined with both Upper Pottsgrove and Pottstown borough in increasing the allocation to the library for 2014.

In Lower Pottsgrove’s case, the commissioners had agreed in December to increase the annual allocation by $5,000 — up to $65,000.

Pottstown Regional Public Library Funding Rescue May Lie With School Parents

POTTSTOWN PA – Can residents in the Lower Pottsgrove portion of the Pottsgrove School District do what they proved capable of five years ago this month: rescue the Pottstown Regional Public Library by encouraging the township Board of Commissioners to restore proposed funding cuts? The school board’s leader is hoping for it.

The library may literally be banking on it.

A majority of commissioners announced last Monday (Jan. 6, 2014), during their reorganization meeting, that they intended to conduct a Feb. 3 (Monday) hearing in part to consider cutting $10,000 in library funding from the township’s already approved 2014 budget. The library had been allocated to receive a $5,000 increase in Lower Pottsgrove’s contribution, from $60,000 annually in each of the past five years, to $65,000 this year.

The majority last week instead suggested it wants to now lower the donation to $55,000, eliminating the increase and another $5,000 as well. Those commissioners – board President Bruce Foltz, Vice President Stephen Klotz, and new member Shawn Watson – have indicated they would prefer to put more money into the police department and other priorities.

Tri-County High School Art Exhibit At MCCC West Campus In Pottstown

High school students from Montgomery, Chester and Berks counties will showcase their artwork at Montgomery County Community College’s first Tri-County High School Art Exhibition and Competition at its Fine Arts Gallery, North Hall, 16 High Street, Pottstown.

The exhibition opens Monday, Jan. 13, and will continue through Friday, Feb. 21. The artists’ reception will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 29, from 5-7 p.m. with the awards presentation at 6 p.m. Both the exhibit and the reception are free and open to the community.

Students from approximately 20 public, parochial and private schools were invited to participate in the exhibition. The artwork features a variety of subjects and styles in an array of media. College art faculty members will be judging the artwork.

Official: West Pottsgrove Murder Victim Was Shot In The Back

WEST POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP — In the day following the shocking murder of a 19-year-old taken by gunpoint from his West Pottsgrove home, who exactly that young man was remains a complicated question.

Kareem Ali Borowy died in the grass at the side of the 2100 block of Sanatoga Station Road Sunday around 2:30 p.m., not long after the abduction from the house on the 1200 block of Manatawny Street.

Montgomery County First Assistant District Attorney Kevin Steele said an autopsy conducted Monday morning determined Borowy died from a gunshot wound to the back.

The manner of death was ruled a homicide, he said.

Several readers told The Mercury that Kareem was the adopted son of Ruth Borowy, who reportedly adopted Kareem and his three siblings — two sisters and a brother — out of Philadelphia and brought them to the Boyertown area.

Pottsgrove Parent: French Teacher Can’t Speak French

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP – The Pennsylvania Department of Education has rejected a complaint filed against district administrators by the parent of a Pottsgrove High School student who argued the district has been negligent in ensuring that the school’s French teacher knows the language well enough to teach it.

In the complaint and in conversations with a reporter, Tony DiPaolo said he had tried for five months to work with the district’s administrators to resolve the issue, particularly when the teacher in question went on leave and the opportunity to find a native language speaker presented itself, but he met resistance and bureaucracy every step of the way.

In the end, “I had no choice,” he said.  “This not only affects my son, but all the other students who think they are being taught proper French.”

DiPaolo is multi-lingual.  His parents are Italian and spoke Italian in the home.  That home was in Montreal and Dipaolo attended a private school there staffed by instructors from France.

Pottsgrove Taps Feola As New Superintendent

LOWER POTTSGROVE — The Pottsgrove School Board announced its intention Friday to appoint Acting Superintendent Shellie Feola to the post permanently.

The vote is scheduled to occur at a special meeting Tuesday, 6:30 p.m., at the district office.

Feola, who has been the district’s assistant superintendent for more than five years, was appointed acting superintendent on Oct. 8 after her predecessor, Bradley Landis left the district to take a post at the Montgomery County Intermediate Unit.

The board has decided to grant her a nearly five-year contract that ends June 30, 2017 which will carry a “pro-rated salary of $169,500,” retroactive to Oct. 8 when she assumed the post, according to a release issued Friday by the district.

$59 Million Pottsgrove School District Budget Brings 2.8% Tax Hike

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP – Property taxes will rise by 2.8 percent in the Pottsgrove School District next year as the result of a 8-1 vote Tuesday by the Pottsgrove School Board.

The vote was the final word on the $58.9 million budget for the 2012-13 school year.

The board also voted to set a millage rate of 35.979 mills for the new fiscal year, an increase of .98 mills.

It will raise taxes by $35.98 for every $1,000 of assessed value, or about $118 for a home valued at $120,000, the district’s median assessment, Nester told The Sanatoga Post.

$10,000 Art Scholarship Deadline Extended For Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship For The Arts

Pottstown, PA – The application deadline for the 3rd annual Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the Arts has been extended until March 10, 2012.  This $10,000 scholarship is designed to financially assist a qualified applicant in pursuing their further education in the arts. The program is open to any Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Hill School or Owen J. Roberts High School senior.  The scholarship is awarded based on two criteria: artistic performance as displayed at the Greater Pottstown Foundation Senior High School Art Exhibit at the Gallery School of Pottstown, and an essay on why an applicant wants to continue their education in the arts.  The applicant’s intended field of study must include a major in an arts related field.

In addition to submitting a completed application form and essay, each student must also participate in the art exhibit at the Gallery School of Pottstown.  Students must create pieces of art from three of four categories: watercolor or pastel; pencil, charcoal or ink; oil or acrylic; and sculpture, which include pottery, stone, glass, metal, fiber or wood. The application and essay must be received by March 10. Artwork does not need to be completed until the art show in May.

Pottsgrove Falcons Beat Strath Haven!!

After four years of losing to Strath Haven, the Pottsgrove Falcons finally won!  In a gutsy move, Pottsgrove went for a two-point conversion and beat Strath Haven 29-28.  If the Falcons would have failed to score, it would be been five straight years Strath Haven has shut Pottsgrove out.

The Falcons are 10-2 for the year and will face Phoenixville in next week’s district championship game.

We congratulate the Pottsgrove Falcons for their win over Strath Haven and wish them well next week against Phoenixville.
