Pottstown Brew Fest To Be Held In Memorial Park, October 4th

A new event is coming to Pottstown.  The craft beer movement is sweeping the nation and Pottstown is no exception.

The event will feature 100+ craft beers and hard ciders from 50+ brewers that you can sample.  Sly Fox will be there representing Pottstown along with many Pennsylvania brewers AND brewers from more than a dozen other states (as far away as Oregon!).

There will be food (Lily’s Grill, The Heart Foodtruck, The Cow and the Curd and Grumpy’s) and music (Celtic Spirit Band).

1500 tickets go on sale starting July 17th at 9:00 am.

The Brew Fest benefits the Pottstown Elks Lodge #814.

US Manufacturing Grows At Fastest Pace In 2½ Years

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. manufacturing grew in November at the fastest pace in 2½ years as factories ramped up production, stepped up hiring and received orders at a healthy clip.

The Institute for Supply Management said Monday that its index of manufacturing activity rose to 57.3. That was up from 56.4 in October and was the highest since April 2011. A reading above 50 signals growth.

One component of the index, a measure of hiring, rose to its highest level in nearly 18 months. And a gauge of export orders reached its highest level in nearly two years. Overseas demand is benefiting from modest recoveries in Europe, Japan and China.

Manufacturing activity has now expanded for six straight months after hitting a rough patch in the spring. The steady gains suggest that growth is remaining healthy in the current October-December quarter.

U.S. Unemployment Rate Falls To 7.7 Percent

WASHINGTON — The U.S. economy added 146,000 jobs in November and the unemployment rate fell to 7.7 percent, the lowest since December 2008. The government said Superstorm Sandy had only a minimal effect on the figures.

The Labor Department‘s report today offered a mixed picture of the economy.

Hiring remained steady during the storm and in the face of looming tax increases. But the government said employers added 49,000 fewer jobs in October and September than it initially estimated.

And the unemployment rate fell to a four-year low in November from 7.9 percent in October mostly because more people stopped looking for work and weren’t counted as unemployed.

Oktoberfest To Expand At ArtsQuest’s SteelStacks

Oktoberfest, the most successful new festival in the first year of ArtsQuest’s SteelStacks campus in 2011, returns in October with new food, new contests and advance tickets that save festival-goers up to 25 percent, it was announced Monday.

The celebration of autumn and the Lehigh Valley‘s Germanic heritage, set for Oct. 5-7 and 12-14, will retain its most popular components: music, food, activities and, of course, beer. And it will have the same title sponsor: D.G. Yuengling & Son brewers.

“The first Oktoberfest celebration at SteelStacks was a huge hit, with nearly 25,000 people coming out,” said ArtsQuest Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Curt Mosel. “This year’s festival will feature even more attractions and special events, with something for all ages.”

Yuengling announced that the Yuengling Oktoberfest beer debuted at last year’s festival “was so well received that it will make a triumphant return in kegs and now bottles for 2012,” Yuengling Marketing Manager Jen Holtzman said.

150,000 PECO Customers Still Without Power

PECO is reporting that at the height of yesterday’s freak blizzard, 250,000 customers were without power.  That number has been reduced to 150,000.

Chester, Bucks and Montgomery Counties were the hardest hit.  Customers in these three counties represent almost 100% of the 150,000 still left without power.

PHILADELPHIA – Mother Nature’s October surprise snowfall has cut power to about 428,000 customers in eastern and central Pennsylvania as trees weighted down by heavy flakes topple onto power lines or traffic accidents bring down utility poles.

Pennsylvania Jobless Rates Dips Again

The unemployment rate in Pennsylvania has dropped for the third consecutive month.  October’s rate fell to 8.8%, down from 9.0% in September.

Oz

I know a brute
who eats rotten fruit,
farmers hogs
and occasionally stray dogs.

He doesn’t make a fuss
over sores that pus,
or body odor so foul
it’s like a hundred dead owls.

His revolting smile
makes my stomach churn bile.
His gums have begun oozing,
it’s my lunch that I’m losing.

His breath could rot wood
and kill Red Riding Hood.
Bring strong men to their knees
begging spare their lives please.

His hair has more lice
than a sewer has mice.
His hands comb like big rakes
then it snows with great flakes.

Sometime he farts a great melody,
but usually it’s silent and deadly.
He can belch a great chorus

since his wife’s the Wicked Witch of the East.
Wasn’t she squashed by a house you say?
Yes, so he killed Scarecrow and used all his hay.

Then Cowardly Lion who just got his courage,
was all chopped up and added to the porridge.
Dorothy and Toto were next on the list,
so he ground them to a pulp with his big giant fist.

What about the Tinman, what happened to him?
Well he’s the brute I’m talking about, his name is Tim.
He wore the costume so all would not see,
the monster inside who just wanted to live free.

So how do I know him, am I his friend?
No, I’m just a fly on the wall whose life’s coming to an end.
Heed my warning; you’re not in Kansas anymore.
This land of Oz hides grisly creatures galore.
