A-Rod No Stranger To Reading

Although his days in the minors never brought him to the Eastern League, Alex Rodriguez was here before.

The New York Yankees third baseman has fond memories of trips to Reading during his childhood.

“It’s a familiar place for me,” Rodriguez said. “I used to come here as a kid to visit family most summers. I never thought I’d come back. I’m excited. It’s been a long time.”

Rodriguez returned Monday as a famous and controversial member of the Trenton Thunder, who defeated the Reading Fightin Phils 6-5 at FirstEnergy Stadium.

The circus is coming to town.

In the center ring will be Alex Rodriguez, one of the most prominent, and controversial, players in baseball history.

He is scheduled to play in Reading tonight as part of a rehab assignment with the New York Yankees following offseason hip surgery.

His appearance will be quite unusual – and for Reading baseball quite historic.

Scranton Just Wild About Derek Jeter

SCRANTON — Casey Prudente chased a rumor and wound up with a story even she finds hard to believe.

Lucky she has the pictures to prove it.

When the captain of the New York Yankees calls you over to his car, it doesn’t matter if the light has turned green.  Traffic on a Scanton corner waited Sunday morning while Derek Jeter snapped photos with Prudente and three friends.

When the passenger window rolled down and he called them over, she was thrilled.  The Scott Township resident had been waiting at the Hilton Scranton and Conference Center since 7 a.m. Sunday, hoping Jeter might be staying there.

Lackawanna County And Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees Reach Tentative Agreement On New Stadium

Lackawanna County and SWB Yankees LLC have reached a tentative agreement that officials believe will keep the New York Yankees Triple-A baseball team playing in Moosic for decades to come, the county announced Friday.

The two sides resolved the final outstanding issues late Thursday night and handed the deal over to lawyers to reduce to a formal, written contract, Commissioner Corey D. O’Brien said. Both sides are confident enough in expecting a final written agreement that they have invited contractors to move in equipment to start work on the up to $40 million new stadium, where the team would play starting next year.

“It’s a substantial step forward,” Mr. O’Brien said. “We still need a signed document.”

A county announcement said the two sides “are on the verge of an agreement,” but Mr. O’Brien and Commissioner Jim Wansacz agreed with the characterization of events as a tentative agreement
