Foles, Eagles Defense Beat Winless Giants, 36-21

Editor’s note: Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — The Philadelphia Eagles did the unexpected in keeping the New York Giants winless.

They got key plays from their bottom-ranked defense and a timely performance from Nick Foles after he replaced an injured Michael Vick late in the first half, sending Eli Manning and the Giants to another loss with a 36-21 victory Sunday.

The Giants’ 0-5 start is their worst since the 1987 strike season when the NFL used replacement players for three games. It comes just two years after New York won the Super Bowl.

Foles threw fourth-quarter touchdown passes of 25 yards to Brent Celek and 5 yards to DeSean Jackson as the Eagles (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak by forcing three interceptions by Manning in the fourth quarter.

PHILADELPHIA — Andy Reid‘s worst coaching season with the Philadelphia Eagles ended today after 14 years when he was fired by owner Jeffrey Lurie, who said it was time “to move in a new direction.”

The dismissal came one day after Reid and the Eagles were humiliated 42-7 by the New York Giants and ended their season at 4-12.

“Andy leaves us with a winning tradition that we can build upon.  And we are very excited about the future,” Lurie said in a statement released by the team.

The team pushed back a scheduled noon EST news conference to 1 p.m.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Andy Reid is out after 14 years coaching the Philadelphia Eagles, three people familiar with the decision told The Associated Press following today’s 42-7 season-ending loss to the New York Giants.

Reid is scheduled to meet with owner Jeffrey Lurie on Monday to discuss his future and an official announcement will come afterward, according to one person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because a final agreement hasn’t been reached.  That person says there’s a chance Reid might remain with the team in some capacity.

Reid is due to make $6 million in 2013 in the final year of his contract.  He said he wants to coach next year, but it’s possible Lurie could persuade him to take a season off and perhaps help out in the front office in an “advisory” role.

Eagles spokesman Derek Boyko denied several reports that Lurie has already fired Reid, saying it’s “absolutely, 100 percent” untrue.

When quarterbacks Eli Manning and Tom Brady display their pigskin prowess in Super Bowl XLVI, they’ll not be the only ones grappling with a football during Sunday’s NFL classic.

Across Berks County and as far away as Connecticut and Texas, diehard fans will be devouring red meat from football-shaped links of Lebanon bologna as they watch the New York Giants and the New England Patriots do battle at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

“They’re the centerpiece of the Super Bowl party,” says Verna Dietrich, 80, whose family operates Dietrich’s Meats & Country Store in Krumsville.

Eagles Embarrass Giants At Meadowlands

The Philadelphia Eagles gutted out a win yesterday over the rival New York Giants in the Meadowlands, coming from behind 24-3 at halftime to beat the Giants 38-31.  The Eagles scored 28 points in the fourth quarter.  The Eagles are now 10-4 for the season and lead the NFC East!

By comparison, former Eagle QB Donovan McNabb and his Redskins are 5 – 9 which is probably where the Eagles would be this season had he not been traded!
