Glodzik Gets 3-12 Months, Work Release In Theft Case In Wilkes-Barre

WILKES-BARRE, PA — “An unfair sentence by a timid judge.”

That was how defense attorney Joseph Sklarosky Sr. characterized the three- to 12-month jail term handed down against his client, former city towing contractor Leo A. Glodzik III, following Glodzik’s sentencing on theft charges Friday morning in Luzerne County Court.

County Judge Lesa S. Gelb gave Glodzik until 9 a.m. Friday to report to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, and declared him immediately available for work release. Sklarosky said Glodzik will appeal in the near future.

LAG Towing owner Glodzik, 43, of Wilkes-Barre, was the city’s exclusive tower for more than eight years, until May 31, 2013. That’s the day he was arrested on accusations of stealing $2,100 planted inside a Cadillac he towed four months earlier, believing the car had been seized from a drug dealer. The cash was bait money planted as part of an FBI sting operation.

Shickshinny Mayor Sues Borough, Officials Over Access

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Bitter differences between Shickshinny Mayor Beverly Moore have spilled over from the council room to the courtroom.

Following January’s dismissal of borough police officer Brian Morris, Moore on Wednesday filed suit against the borough and several officials, alleging a pattern of behavior including secret meetings, being denied access to municipal offices and being forced to file right-to-know requests to see borough documents.

Moore, who was first elected to the post in 1997, also named as defendants council members Michael Steeber, James Wido, and Roselee Whitbread and secretary Wendy Kramer, according to documents filed in Luzerne County Court.

Her suit describes some of the battles that have roiled the waters at council meetings for more than a year.

Sherman Hills Moves To Evict 10

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Sherman Hills Realty has filed eviction notices against 10 tenants — including an eyewitness in a homicide case — for non-payment of rent and lease violations.

The notices were filed with District Judge Martin Kane in Wilkes-Barre.

One of the tenants being evicted for failure to pay rent is a witness in the deadly shooting within the troubled apartment complex in November.

Jasmin Frazier allegedly owes $366 in back rent. She testified during a preliminary hearing last month that she saw Kenneth Evans III, 21, brandishing a handgun and reaching into a Jeep Grand Cherokee discharging two rounds that struck Shantique Goodson, 27, on Nov. 11.

Wilkes-Barre Landlord Loses ‘One-Strike’ Appeal

After losing his appeal, the owner of the first apartment shutdown by Wilkes-Barre‘s one-strike ordinance said he’s taking the city to court.

Red Hill resident Adam Peters, whose rental unit at 216 Carlisle St. was closed by the city in September after his tenant was arrested for dealing drugs, asked for the penalty to be repealed during a hearing at city hall Tuesday. The housing appeals board unanimously upheld the first use of the city’s one-strike ordinance, which allows it to shut down rental properties for six months if they’re the location of a drug or weapons crime.

Peters said he’ll take his appeal to a judge in Luzerne County court. Peters’ attorney John Bradley said he’s also going to challenge the ordinance’s constitutionality. He hasn’t decided whether he’ll do so in county or federal court.

Wilkes-Barre Wife Killed In Domestic Dispute, Police Say

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Residents living on Andover Street said they knew Vito Joseph Aiello was capable of harming his wife, Jane.

Their concerns became real late Thursday night when he allegedly killed her in a shooting before turning the gun on himself. He survived a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his face, police said. The couple would have celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary today.

Authorities are treating the case as a murder/attempted suicide.

An autopsy is scheduled today at Wilkes-Barre General Hospital.

Wilkes-Barre Police Investigating Deadly Shooting

WILKES-BARRE, PA — City police and the Luzerne County District Attorney’s Office are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of a 47-year-old woman and critically injuring a 48-year-old man on Andover Street late Thursday night.

Police said the shooting at 389 Andover St. occurred just after 11 p.m.

McDonald’s Sued For Paying Pa. Employees With Fee-Carrying Debit Cards

She spent her days serving up Happy Meals, but when it came time to get paid, Natalie Gunshannon says a local McDonald’s franchisee gave her an unhappy deal.

The Shavertown McDonald’s forces workers to be paid only one way: with a payroll debit card that burdens workers with hefty fees to obtain their hard-earned cash, according to a lawsuit filed Thursday on behalf of Gunshannon and other McDonald’s workers.

Gunshannon and an untold number of current and former employees had no option to receive a traditional paycheck or get paid by direct deposit, she and her attorneys said in the class-action against franchise owners Albert and Carol Mueller of Clarks Summit.

“I’m looking for the pay I am owed and for them to understand there has to be an option,” Gunshannon, 27, said Thursday outside her Dallas Township residence.
