When Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology officials came to City Hall and asked the city to sell them the former National Guard armory site, Mayor Rick Gray’s answer was “no.”

The armory was an unexpected windfall for the city, but the city needed it badly.

The buildings which had been used to service military vehicles would become a new maintenance garage to replace the city’s crumbling facility.

But, eventually, college officials persuaded Gray an expansion of the technical school was in the best interests of the college and the surrounding neighborhood.

A 26-year-old father of three young children was gunned down late Sunday in Lancaster Township in what police believe was not a random attack.

The Lancaster County coroner identified the victim as Jonathan Santiago of 840 Prangley Ave., which is about a block and a half from where the shooting occurred.

Santiago was with a group of people walking near James Buchanan Elementary School when he was shot just after 11:30 p.m., Manheim Township police Lt. Robert Baldwin said.

The shooter was near a parked white Honda. The suspect and others fled in the vehicle after the shooting, Baldwin said.

When Chris Garcia was younger, he wanted to be a police officer or an FBI agent.

“It’s really cool to crack cases and be a good person,” said Chris, who accomplished both feats July 11 when he helped save a 5-year-old girl after she was abducted from outside her grandmother’s home in Lancaster Township.

Now the 13-year-old has career aspirations that include being a pro football player or a mechanical engineer.

But he will always be a good person, thanks to his upbringing.

A convicted pedophile who authorities have called a “person of interest” in last week’s abduction of a 5-year-old girl in Lancaster Township failed to check in with state police earlier this year as required under Megan’s Law.

Harold Leroy Herr, 73, was supposed to visit police between April 28 and May 7, but did not, according to Southern Regional police.

He is required by law to check in with police four times a year for his 1990 conviction involving the kidnapping and rape of a 5-year-old girl.

Herr was arrested Friday in Conestoga Township, where he lives, and was charged with violating the Megan’s Law check-in requirement, a second-degree felony.  He’s being held at Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $200,000 bail.

Temar Boggs had a feeling he’d find the 5-year-old girl who was abducted Thursday in Lancaster Township.

He was right.

Boggs, a McCaskey freshman who lives in Gable Park Woods, had been hanging out with a friend at nearby Lancaster Arms apartments and helping move a couch when a man came by asking if they’d seen a missing girl.

They hadn’t, Boggs said, so they went to watch TV.
