Lancaster General Health Compensation: Plenty, But Not Out Of Line

For the guy who just opened a $300 bill from Lancaster General Health for five minutes worth of blood work, the six- and seven-figure compensation for top LGH officials may be enough to get that blood boiling.

But LGH’s compensation appears to be in line with industry standards.  In fact, you might make a case that Lancaster General President and CEO Tom Beeman is underpaid.

To put LGH compensation in context, Lancaster Newspapers compared it with compensation at five regional hospitals or health systems about the same size as Lancaster General: Wellspan Health, in York County; Pinnacle Health, in Dauphin County; Reading Health, in Berks County; Lehigh Valley Health, in Lehigh County; and the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, also in Dauphin County.

The figures show that Beeman got less than the top executives at four of the five comparable institutions.

In 2010, Beeman made $1.35 million in total compensation.

Lancaster Newspapers Charting New Direction

Lancaster Newspapers announced a series of changes Monday to strengthen its focus on delivering local news and information to Lancaster County residents.

In the first step of this effort, the company named Ernest Schreiber as executive editor, overseeing its news-gathering operation seven days a week.

Schreiber, who came out of retirement to take the newly created position, will lead a combination of the Intelligencer Journal/Lancaster New Era and Sunday News staffs.

Effective immediately, the 75 reporters, editors and photographers will operate as a single newsroom, not two.

Burger King’s Pulled Pork Earns Four Thumbs Up (but no coleslaw)

This week I reached out for a Memphis BBQ Pulled Pork Sandwich from the No. 2 burger flipper, Burger King, with 12,300 restaurants in 50 states plus 76 international markets.

Take that, McDonald’s and your McRib — now Burger King is getting porky, too.

Here’s the blueprint: tender pulled pork with hickory-smoke Memphis-style barbecue sauce, topped with sliced onions and a “sweet Southern sauce” (more about this later) on a toasted artisan bun.

Total calories: 470. Fat grams: 16. Sodium: 1,420 mg. Dietary fiber: 1 g. Carbs: 61 g. Manufacturer’s suggested retail price: $3.49.

Lancaster PA 10th-Smoggiest Midsized Metropolitan Area In The United States

Despite continuing air-quality improvements, Lancaster was the 10th-smoggiest midsize metropolitan area in the United States during 2010, according to a report.

Using data from government air-quality monitors, the Philadelphia-based group PennEnvironment also found the Lancaster area tied with Pittsburgh for the second-most number of unhealthy smog days among all metropolitan areas in Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia had the worst smog in the state, according to the report, “Danger in the Air: Unhealthy Air Days in 2010 and 2011.”
