Kennett Square Gets New, Refined Historic District

KENNETT SQUARE, PA – By a 4-3 vote, council Monday night adopted an ordinance that creates a new, expanded historic district, disbands the borough’s historic commission, and creates a unified Historic Architectural Review Board. The measure will affect every structure in the new and refined historic district.

“This is probably the toughest decision that we have made as a council,” said Leon Spencer, council president.

Councilors Geoff Bosley, Chip Plumley and Patrick Taylor dissented.

The ordinance is the result of a compromise from a previous proposed historic district ordinance that was more stringent and had two separate historic zones. That proposal was defeated last year.

Plan Calls For 175 Luxury Apartments In Downtown Kennett Square

KENNETT SQUARE, PA – Borough officials are considering a plan that would bring 175 luxury apartments and a pub restaurant to the western section of town.

Called The Lofts, it will be located very close to Victory Brewing Co. on Cypress Street that will open sometime this month. Specifically it will be bordered by State Street to the north, Washington Street to the east, South Mill to the west, and Bernard Alley to the south.

Developer, StanAb Real Estate Development Co. of West Chester, purchased the entire 600 block of State Street recently, which had been the site of Kennett Motors and Kennett Transmissions.

“Except for Magnolia Place, there are few other choices (for rental housing),” said Tony Stancato, an executive with StanAb. “The lure of Kennett Square is that is has walkable amenities, and there are many businesses wanting to come to Kennett. Demand for rental has been increasing with those ages 20 to 34 holding off buying decisions for many reasons. Kennett Square is an underserved marking for rental housing.”

The Mushroom Drop Returns For New Year’s Eve

KENNETT SQUARE, PA – After a successful debut on New Year’s Eve 2013, the great Mushroom Drop will return this year to greet 2015.

The huge fungus made of lights will descend from a crane at the corner of State and Union streets at midnight.

Last year thousands of people arrived for the event that included food, music and all the enthusiasm of Times Square. Chairman Kathi Lafferty expects nothing less this year.

This event is free with the request that guests bring a can of food that will be contributed to the Kennett Square Food Cupboard.

Harrisburg Heat Player Shot Multiple Times After Altercation In West Chester

Jason Hotchkin, who plays for the Harrisburg Heat, was shot multiple times and hospitalized after an altercation early Sunday morning in West Chester, Pa., according to police.

Hotchkin, 35, was admitted to the Paoli Memorial Hospital shortly after the shooting, which was reported at 2:14 a.m. in the 50 block of North Church Street, according to West Chester police.

Hotchkin was in critical condition upon his arrival but was listed as stable by a hospital spokeswoman as of 9 a.m. Monday.

A West Chester police press release states that Hotchkin was shot multiple times and sustained injuries to his leg, arms and back.  Police believe Hotchkin and another victim, 35-year-old Maffat E. Odvor, were out with two females when the shooting took place.

Foot Traffic Draws New Business To Kennett Square

A store owner has moved his store from Delaware to Kennett Square because he likes how vibrant the downtown business community has become.

Mystique, a store that offers men’s and women’s clothing, opened this week at 11 E. State St.

A grand opening is planned for March 2.

“Kennett Square is one of the top 10 small towns in the nation, and they have monthly events, which is wonderful,” said Bill McClane, owner of the store. “I really like the mix here with the variety of stores and all the people walking around.”
