Summertime, and the livin’‍ is … steamy?

Welcome to Summer 2014 as The Old Farmer’s Almanac and its rival publication, the Farmers’‍ Almanac, forecast it.

Summer, which officially began at 6:51 a.m. today will be scorching hot and unbearably humid with thunderstorms soaking here and throughout the entire eastern section of the United States, the publications predict.

Wait. You don’t like that? Then perhaps you’‍d prefer the National Weather Service’s more temperate long-range prediction. Its forecast says the Pittsburgh region likely will have a typical summer for temperature and precipitation.

Farmers’ Almanac Predicts Woeful Winter Weather

The 2014 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac that hit newsstands Monday offers homespun remedies, tasty recipes and a wallop of a wintry forecast that’s too bone-chilling to fathom in a week with highs in the 80s.

“We don’t use four-letter words but when it comes to this winter’s weather the word is c-o-l-d,” said managing editor Sandi Duncan.  “We’re predicting two-thirds of the country will have below-average temperatures for the winter season, and in some areas the temperatures will be biting and piercing.”

If all that’s not enough incentive to head to the grocery store right now to stock up, then choose between these poisons: The Pittsburgh region is right on the predicted dividing line of a winter that’s “bitterly cold and snow filled” (north through New York and virtually all of New England) and one that’s “cold, wet and white” (through West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey).

“You guys are right on the borderline,” Ms. Duncan said. “It looks like it’s going to be a wet winter, and more white than wet in Pittsburgh.”

Hot Weekend Predicted For TriCounty Region

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — It’s going to be a hot weekend in parts of eastern Pennsylvania.

The National Weather Service issued an excessive heat warning Friday for Philadelphia and some suburbs including Berks, Chester and Montgomery counties.  The agency also put out heat advisories for the Lehigh Valley.

The warnings are in effect from 11 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday.  Forecasters say Philadelphia will hit highs in the mid-90s on Saturday, with humidity making it feel like it’s more than 100 degrees.

The city will likely see scattered showers and thunderstorms on Sunday.  Highs are predicted to be in the lower 90s, with humidity making it feel closer to 100.
