Pottstown Community Field Day Aug 27‏

Genesis Housing is joining with the Hill School, Art Fusion 19464, Pottstown Athletic Club, Pottstown Area Health and Wellness Foundation, CustomFit and others to create a day for families to spend time together learning about low-cost outdoor and indoor activities available in our area.

The Pottstown Community Field Day will take place on Saturday, August 27th from 11 AM – 2 PM (Rain date: Sunday, August 28th) at the Chestnut Street Park (Washington & Chestnut Streets). There will be 15 stations of fitness/sports or other activities for group participation for about 5 minutes.  The DJ will play family appropriate music continuously until the 5 minutes are up.   At that time, the DJ will use audio equipment to announce SWITCH and each group will move on to a new station.  Each participant will receive a coin for every station they complete.  When they complete 10 stations, participants will receive a free gift.  We will track how many people completed the minimum challenge equating to at least 45 minutes of fitness.

We are asking for area businesses and organizations to participate in the 3-hour event by making a donation, facilitating fitness stations and setting up information tables. In appreciation for any organization that donates and/or participates, we will advertise their company in social media outlets and in printed materials. We will also provide the opportunity to set up an information table and include coupons or other information in the free gift packs.

For more information or to support the event, please contact me at wash5000@msn.com or (484) 300-2410. Please join us and be a part of this great day!

Howard Brown Backs Growing Stop The Violence Campaign In Pottstown

POTTSTOWN, PA — A local hoops legend lent his support Monday night to the anti-violence movement that began in the borough a little more than a month ago.

“When I heard about this, it’s just a natural thing for me to want to be involved in some capacity,” said Howard Brown, the Pottstown grad who went on to play basketball at Villanova and internationally. “We’re actually drumming up a lot of residents and former residents to just not only bring awareness but to talk about some of the issues that we do have, to change.”

With a driving rain cancelling plans for a full march, the Stop the Violence campaign moved indoors at the Ricketts Center, where players in the Olivet Boys and Girls Club’s summer basketball league gathered together between games to pose for a picture and show their support of the movement.

A Maryland resident now, Brown is in town for a combine for his basketball agency, iBall United, which will be held over the weekend both in Valley Forge and at The Hill School.

Hill’s Student Philanthropy Council Now Accepting RFPs For Grant Program

Editor’s note: This is way cool! Nice give back to the Greater Pottstown Community 🙂

The Hill School is now accepting applications from Pottstown-area nonprofit organizations for its Student Philanthropy Council (SPC) grant program.  Interested organizations may download and submit a Request for Proposal.   View and print a PDF of the Request for Proposal here.  Completed applications must be submitted by Thursday, January 20, 2014.

The SPC was established in 2009 through a gift to The Hill School courtesy of Charles A. Frank III, Hill ’59, and his wife, Betty. Hill student participants solicit and evaluate local nonprofit requests for funding, and then award a total of $10,000 in grants each year.  Last year, through the Franks’ leadership and the generosity of several other donors, The Student Philanthropy Council became an endowed program at the School with the establishment of The Student Philanthropy Council Endowment in honor of Kay and David Dougherty.

Last year, representatives of the SPC presented a total of $10,000, to four local organizations: Pottstown Downtown Improvement District Authority ($2,110); The Growing Center ($2,690); Montgomery Child Advocacy Project ($2,500); and the Pottstown Cluster of Religious Organizations ($2,700).  Read more about the recipients of the 2013 grants.

The SPC is comprised of 12 students – including co-presidents Sanobar Shaikh ’14 and Omeed Alidadi ’14 – who meet once a week to study the process of philanthropy and visit the sites of various organizations.  Mrs. Amy Lehman, Hill’s experiential education coordinator, is the faculty adviser to the group. SPC members are chosen based on the quality of their applications, interviews, and their sincere ability to commit time to the group.

Projects Sought For Pottstown Neighborhood Cleanup

POTTSTOWN — As planning for the Pottstown CARES cleanup event moves ahead, those hoping to help spruce up Pottstown’s core neighborhood and generate some activism there are soliciting residents for projects they might undertake.

The CARES project, standing for Community, Awareness, Responsibility, Empowerment, and Sustainability, has the three entities working on a community cleanup day scheduled for Oct. 25.

“We are trying to build a list of “doable” spruce- up projects, and the best way for us to do this is to generate a list of residents and their specific concerns/requests,” according to Cathy Skitko, communications director at The Hill School which is partnering with Pottstown borough and school district on the project.

Requests can be emailed to PottstownCARES@pottstown.org, or you can follow the link on the borough’s web page to make requests or register concerns.

POTTSTOWN — Three prominent forces in the borough have banded together to plan a cleanup effort to stimulate growth and vitality in parts of Pottstown.

Pottstown School District employees and school board members, The Hill School administration and staff, and borough employees were present at a Tuesday meeting at the Richard J. Ricketts Center to begin planning for the Pottstown CARES initiative.

The CARES project, standing for Community, Awareness, Responsibility, Empowerment, and Sustainability, has the three entities working on a community cleanup day scheduled for Oct. 25.

The planning meeting was spearheaded by Assistant Borough Manager Erica Weekley, Hill School Headmaster Zach Lehman and Hill Communications Director Cathy Skitko.  The meeting was called so the groups could work with locals to identify the primary concerns and problems to tackle in the assigned cleanup area, and to identify solutions for those problems.

Pottstown Joint Meeting Wrestles With Jobs Versus Lost Tax Dollars

POTTSTOWN — During the first joint meeting of the year between borough council and the Pottstown School Board, discussion was free-flowing and frequent.

Perhaps highest on the list, and the subject which generated the most focused conversation, had to do with a business that wants to occupy the former 84 Lumber truss plant at the end of Keystone Boulevard.

Steve Bamford, the director of Pottstown Area Industrial Development Inc. and the borough’s chief economic development officer, gave for the third time, an overview of the Keystone Opportunity Zone program and the request from Heritage Coach Co. to occupy some of the space there.

Sellers of hearses and limousines, Heritage began as a side business for the Lankford family, which also operated a GM dealership in Conshohocken that was shut down during what Jay Lankford, a Hill School graduate, called GM’s “political sham of a bankruptcy.”

Pottstown Area Industrial Development, Inc.’s (PAID) Public Meeting

Location of Pottstown in Montgomery County

Image via Wikipedia

Tonight, in the Hill School library, PAID’s new governing body was introduced to the public.  Jason Bobst, Pottstown Borough Manager and PAID’s first President ran the meeting.

Basically, most of the meeting was taken up with revisiting what has gone on in the past and talking about where we find ourselves today.  Dr. Lindley introduced each board member and gave bullet points about their resume.  There are familiar faces and new faces on the 13 member board.  The skill sets of the new board are very impressive and should lend themselves to the task at hand; making sure Pottstown has a bright future and realizes its potential.

The big news was about the new Executive Director search.  This person will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of PAID and will become the central point of contact for economic development in Pottstown.

I was relieved to learn that an extensive national search is being conducted.  I had heard rumors that we might be recycling to fill this position.  At this juncture we need the most qualified person possible.  It would in fact be better if this person was not from “around here” and would come to Pottstown with a clean slate and fresh ideas.  It sounds like the board might feel this way also.  Jason told us the job has been posted and we are accepting resumes.

Once a “short list” of candidates emerges, there will be another public part where residents may have the opportunity to hear candidates speak about themselves and the task at hand.  I hope so!

Jason said there will be four committees within PAID that will be working on specific tasks.  It will be easier to get the smaller committees together than all 13 board members.  The committees are marketing/visioning, infrastructure, business and grants/funding.  PAID will also be looking for a long-term funding source to make sure the organization is self-sufficient.

We currently have a consultant who is working with PAID until the new Director is hired.  We are not fiddling while Rome burns.

A new spirit of cooperation and coordination will hopefully develop from this venture.  Pottstown is looking to work with regional and state entities for economic development purposes and marketing.  It is hoped that all the factions in Pottstown can finally come together with a unity of vision and purpose.

Jason said one thing Pottstown needs to improve upon is showcasing its successes.  I totally agree with that statement.  We tend to be our own worst enemy when it comes to civic pride.  We need to market, market, market this town, put our best foot forward and smile the whole time!  We might have better luck attracting people and business if were positive about POTTSTOWN!  What a radical idea.

The meeting was opened up to questions.

Tom Carroll (Schuylkill River Heritage Trail) stated he was concerned there was no representation from MCCC on the board.  Tom pointed out the importance of the West Campus to Pottstown and that we should leverage our relationship with MCCC to help achieve mutually beneficial successes.  It was pointed out that while MCCC is not now represented on the board, there is room to add representation from MCCC down the road.  I hope this happens!

Erika Hornburg-Cooper (Galley School) brought up the arts component in revitalization.  The board is definitely aware how important arts and culture are to revitalization, quality of life issues and attracting residents.

Another member of the audience asked about the involvement of the Pottsgroves and Coventries.  The answer is we are concentrating on the borough first and then a more regional focus will naturally evolve.  I am glad we are concentrating on Pottstown first, for once!

I realize this has taken longer to carry out than many of us were hoping, however it does sound like a great deal of planning and thought have gone into assembling a board and getting a good cross-section of community representation.  At last, the Executive Director position is being advertised.  It would seem we are now on our way.  We wish PAID much success with the task at hand.  We will be watching and reporting.

PAID will be using the 2008 Pottstown Economic Development Strategic Plan and the 2009 ULI report to set priorities.

Pottstown Council Gets Their Act Together Regarding Economic Development

I read, with much delight, in today’s Pottstown Mercury that Pottstown Borough Council has made a historic decision regarding economic development that will finally propel us forward on the road to economic recovery.

For years, efforts on the economic development front have been fragmented and lacking a unified voice.  A new partnership has been forged which will merge all the fragments into one entity, thereby increasing political clout and sending out a clear message of what Pottstown’s game plan is to recover.

Using the model created in Johnstown, PA, Pottstown will move forward economically.  Pottstown is in a better position to rebound than Johnstown so if this strategy worked there, it should work here.  That is, if we can stop shooting ourselves in the collective foot, move forward with a plan and stop squabbling amongst ourselves for all the world to see.

The Pottstown Area Industrial Development Corporation will be restructured with a new executive director who will possess regional or national credentials!  AWESOME!  Bring in an expert from outside the area without the local baggage and a positive attitude.

Kudos to Council for taking this courageous step forward.  Team work is the direction to go.  This project is too big for one group.  It needs all the major players at the table, speaking the same language.

We look forward to the future and what this new mindset brings!
