Monessen police are looking for two men involved in a drive-by shooting Tuesday afternoon.
City police were called to Somerset Street around 2:20 p.m. when neighbors heard gunfire.
Police Chief John Mandarino said the suspects, believed to be white or light-skinned black men in a black or dark blue sport utility vehicle, were traveling down Somerset Street when one of the men shot toward a house. The bullets struck three houses on the same block.
A woman huddling in a home basement near where Pottstown police are engaged in a standoff with an apartment dweller has told her husband she heard “a ton of gunshots” this afternoon.
“My wife just heard a ton of gunshots,” John Shoen, pool manager of the Mary Robin Brigham Aquatic Center in Berwyn, e-mailed at 3:24 p.m. today. “She is on Logan Street in the basement of my sister’s house with my son. She called me on her cellphone crying.”
Shoen said his wife and son were in the basement at 713 Logan, maybe five or 10 houses from the Logan Square Apartments where the standoff was occurring.
Williamsport is having a bad week. There have been four shootings since Sunday. Yesterday afternoon shots were fired between two vehicles a few blocks west of Williamsport General Hospital. One person was wounded and taken to a local hospital.
Sunday night a nonfatal shooting occurred in Memorial Park. Early Wednesday morning a second nonfatal shooting occurred on West Fourth Street. Wednesday night a Philadelphia man was killed along High Street.
Police and city officials and trying to come up with a solution for the recent rash of gunfire. Police say the shootings are not random.
