IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Gallery Manager Revels In Lancaster City’s Arts Renaissance

If it is done right, you don’t think about anything but the art when you walk into a gallery.

No thoughts about the work behind it all: how the art got there, the way it was hung, how it was promoted or what happened to the artwork that used to be up on the wall.

At Red Raven Art Co., that’s all the job of Lee Lovett, who has managed the gallery at 138 N. Prince St. since October 2006, just five months after it opened.

“I do everything from contacting artists, sending out contracts and hanging the gallery each month with a new show to designing the postcards and ads, managing and uploading our website, and finally handling all the accounting and bookkeeping,” she says.

Lancaster Summer Arts Festival Still Going Strong After 50 Years

Fifty years ago, Lancaster was a very different place than it is today.

There was no Long’s Park amphitheater, no Gallery Row and the Fulton had barely survived being turned into a parking lot.

If you loved concerts, art shows, dance recitals or children’s shows, your options were few and far between.

But the Lancaster Summer Arts Festival, which officially got started 50 years ago this summer, began to change all that.

If Lancaster’s First Friday Is A Taste, ArtWalk Is The Full Smorgasbord

How do you keep a good thing going?

You keep it fresh.  You keep it innovative.

And you keep it energized.

In the past three years, Lancaster’s Fall ArtWalk has been gaining momentum, and director Nick Mohler sees the city-wide event’s success as one based on change.

“I think ArtWalk is changing.  I’m seeing galleries trying new things,” says Mohler.  “There’s been a lot of discussion with local art groups to put on performance art, which is something I think will come more into focus in the spring next year.”

Lancaster Arts Community Throws Open Doors

Let there be light — or at least some darned good-looking lampshades — on North Queen Street.

Fans of the eye-popping, Art Nouveau glass shades that crowned traditional Tiffany lamps will find a treat waiting at the Art & Glassworks studio, 319 N. Queen St., during Lancaster ArtWalk Saturday and Sunday.

The self-guided tour of local arts venues, organized by the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, includes a featured stop to view the glass studio’s six or so polychromatic dragonfly, peony, poppy and tulip lamps.

Art & Glassworks owner Karin Meacham has been buying Tiffany lamp molds and bases from a California company, and she and her staff have created several vivid lamp mosaics of red, green, blue and yellow glass.

New Gallery Opening On First Friday In Downtown Lancaster

Northumberland County couple hang shingle on Water Street

They were only supposed to be visiting for the day.

In early June, Jody and Cheryl Fallon came to Lancaster to see a friend’s art exhibit on Gallery Row.

The Fallons, married artists who live about two hours north of Lancaster, walked around town and wound up in a gallery on Water Street.

They noticed the space next door was vacant and learned it was for rent. They looked at each other, Jody Fallon recalled, and an idea formed.
