An extremely rare donation graced the loading dock this week of a nonprofit shop dedicated to providing clothes to Reading’s homeless and impoverished.

An entire van filled with men’s clothing backed up to the rear door of the City Thrift Shop, 314 Penn St., and was unloaded by Jim Long of Rockland Township and shop volunteer Jan Buskirk of Wyomissing.

Donations of men’s clothing are the hardest to come by, said Christine Leonhardt, who began managing the shop about eight years ago.

Fleetwood School District Cuts Could Be Deep, Wide

Proposed staff cuts in the Fleetwood School District aimed at balancing the budget would primarily impact elective courses at the high school and speciality classes at the middle and elementary schools, district officials confirmed Friday.

The proposed cuts, which will be unveiled publicly at Tuesday’s school board meeting, include laying off three teachers and six support staff members, demoting seven teachers to part time and axing the district’s wrestling program. Four more teaching positions would be eliminated through attrition.

The school board will ultimately decide whether to go forward with the changes intended to help the district close a gap of at least $847,000 in its $38.6 million 2012-13 budget.

The administrators’ contract with the district is set to expire at the end of the school year. The group has agreed to a one-year pact that does not include salary increases.

Eaken said administrators did not feel it was appropriate to accept pay raises when the district is facing financial difficulties that will likely impact students and staff.

Fleetwood Superintendent Says Teacher Pay Freeze Will Help

Fleetwood Superintendent of Schools, Paul B. Eaken stated a pay free would cut about $800,000 off the district’s budget deficit of $1.9 million.  Putting his money where his mouth is, Eaken and the rest of the district’s administration have also volunteered to forgo pay raises.  Walking the talk is critically important at times like these.  Two Roy’s Rants thumbs up to Superintendent Eaken for leading by example!
