Snowy Look To Outlooks

Anyone serious about weather won’t care about this, but the Old Farmer’s Almanac is calling for snow and cold in the Philadelphia region.

What is of perhaps more significant is that its outlook is in line with those posted so far from some more conventional neighborhoods of the meteorological community.

AccuWeather went on record two weeks ago as calling for a snowy winter in the Northeast, with above-normal snowfall around here.

Summertime, and the livin’‍ is … steamy?

Welcome to Summer 2014 as The Old Farmer’s Almanac and its rival publication, the Farmers’‍ Almanac, forecast it.

Summer, which officially began at 6:51 a.m. today will be scorching hot and unbearably humid with thunderstorms soaking here and throughout the entire eastern section of the United States, the publications predict.

Wait. You don’t like that? Then perhaps you’‍d prefer the National Weather Service’s more temperate long-range prediction. Its forecast says the Pittsburgh region likely will have a typical summer for temperature and precipitation.

Predictions Mixed For Winter In Berks County

When the 2014 Farmers’ Almanac came out in August, it predicted this winter would be bitterly cold with significant snowfalls.

On Thursday, AccuWeather released its long-range winter forecast, calling for winter to get off to a slow start in the East in terms of cold temperatures and snowfall.

“Winter will begin mildly, with a long duration of above-normal temperatures,” AccuWeather predicted. “One snow system and some chilly air could come at times during November, however.

“Temperatures will fall in the latter part of the season, likely the beginning of January, allowing snow to fall along the I-95 corridor.”

Farmers’ Almanac Predicts Woeful Winter Weather

The 2014 edition of the Farmers’ Almanac that hit newsstands Monday offers homespun remedies, tasty recipes and a wallop of a wintry forecast that’s too bone-chilling to fathom in a week with highs in the 80s.

“We don’t use four-letter words but when it comes to this winter’s weather the word is c-o-l-d,” said managing editor Sandi Duncan.  “We’re predicting two-thirds of the country will have below-average temperatures for the winter season, and in some areas the temperatures will be biting and piercing.”

If all that’s not enough incentive to head to the grocery store right now to stock up, then choose between these poisons: The Pittsburgh region is right on the predicted dividing line of a winter that’s “bitterly cold and snow filled” (north through New York and virtually all of New England) and one that’s “cold, wet and white” (through West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland and New Jersey).

“You guys are right on the borderline,” Ms. Duncan said. “It looks like it’s going to be a wet winter, and more white than wet in Pittsburgh.”
