Following up last year’s concert of Parts 1, 2 and 3, this year’s performance of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio offers the final three cantatas. Choir member and writer David Ruhf characterized the work in this way:

“The Christmas Oratorio includes many kinds of joy and devotion, from ecstatic rhapsody to hushed bliss. … no better way to begin December’s festivities than to encounter this radiant music, offered with love and passion in an atmosphere of celebratory and appreciative engagement.”

From ballet to Breaking, internationally acclaimed choreographers are creating dance’s next wave right here in the Lehigh Valley!

This exceptional showcase offers up-to-the-minute, state-of-the-dance work in Nora Gibson’s 2^57,885,161 -1, an abstract ballet about the beauty and opacity of prime number theory, and in Land Bridge, French-Canadian artist Helen Simoneau’s meditation on traversing dualities, inspired by the endangered caribou. From the perspective of a mature artist in the form, 2016 Guggenheim Fellow Raphael Xavier explores the notion of sustainability in Breaking, a highly physical idiom associated with youth, in Point of Interest.

ONE OF THE MOST SENSATIONAL FARCES EVER WRITTEN

Charley’s Aunt is set during the Victorian era at Oxford University, in the quarters of two undergraduates who frantically search for a way to express their love to their soon departing sweethearts. The solution to their problem comes in the form of Charley’s aunt who is visiting from Brazil. With her acting as a chaperone, the boys can invite their lovers to an official lunch and finally pop the question. However, all goes wrong when a message arrives informing the boys that the aunt is delayed and won’t make it in time. In a last ditch effort the young lads coerce their friend to don a dress and become “Charley’s aunt.” Throughout the afternoon the troublesome trio fumble through spastic conversations, unexpected suitors, cat-and-mouse meet-ups, and the occasional teatime mishap. Charley’s Aunt is a frenzied farce filled with so many twists and turns it will make your head spin.

$20 RUSH TICKETS For Moscow String Quartet‏

Moscow String Quartet

  • Beethoven: String Quartet No. 8 in E Minor, Op. 59, No. 2
  • Mozart: String Quartet No. 16 in Eb Major, K. 428
  • Schnittke: String Quartet No. 2

Friday ◊ April 17, 2015 ◊ 7:30 p.m.
Faith United Church of Christ
Center Valley, PA
Founded in 1975 by Moscow Conservatory students of the Borodin Quartet’s famed cellist Valentin Berlinsky, the Moscow String Quartet has been praised by The Philadelphia Inquirer for the grace, sonority, and lyricism associated with Borodin, “their natural home.” Included in the ensemble’s impressive repertoire, of course, are Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. They have also championed the work of more contemporary Russian composers like Sofia Gubaidulina and Alfred Schnittke. The MSQ artists name, as their inspirations, great Russian musicians: Oistrakh, Rostropovich, Richter, Gilels, and Berlinsky. It is no wonder that they are considered one of the major Russian chamber ensembles currently performing and recording.

At a concert organized by West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt and at the special invitation of then Soviet composer Alfred Schnittke, the group played in Berlin Stadium to celebrate the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The quartet has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, including performances in the United States at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and the White House. Glowing reviews of MSQ performances consistently focus on the group’s musical patience, producing “inward subtleties” (The Philadelphia Inquirer) and its “lithe athleticism and wry wit” (Stereophile). The Dallas Morning News noted “deft, elegant playing, passionate where called for, but never hysterical. . . . a welcome reprieve from the turbocharged assaults” too often made by other ensembles. Jerry Dubins, in reviewing for Fanfare a new release (2014) of the quartet’s performance of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 2 in A, declared “this is amazing music-making at its highest level.”

“The poetry of this play…like the most fragrant music, strikes deep chords that words cannot begin to touch.” –The New York Times
