Aldi To Reopen 30 Of 66 Shut Bottom Dollar Stores

Discount grocer Aldi said Friday that it will reopen 30 of the 66 former Bottom Dollar stores it took over in Pennsylvania, South Jersey, and northeast Ohio after the previous owner, the Delhaize Group, shut Bottom Dollar last year.

Five ex-Bottom Dollar stores in Philadelphia and 14 in the suburbs will reopen. Four Philadelphia stores will stay shut, along with 13 in the suburbs.

Aldi, an Illinois-based U.S. arm of Germany’s Albrecht family grocery conglomerate, said in 2013 it planned a $3 billion expansion, and Friday’s announcement is part of that effort.

Aldi Sees Growth And Expansion

WEST NORRITON — Interested in a job with a growing grocery chain that starts you off with a salary of 50 grand?

Career opportunities with Aldi, an expanding international retail giant that operates two stores in our area, continue to abound.

The chain known for its generous salaries and benefits is hosting a hiring event on June 4 for more than 20 manager trainee positions for its regional stores, including West Norriton and East Norriton.

The manager trainee position, which pays $50,000, was created as a relatively quick segue to a store manager position and a $70,000 salary for a 40-hour week, explained Shaun O’Keefe, director of operations, by phone from the Aldi distribution center in Center Valley.

Bottom Dollar To Close Shelbourne Square Shopping Center Site

The Bottom Dollar Food store is closing in Shelbourne Square Shopping Center by mid-February.

Christy Phillips-Brown, spokeswoman for Delhaize America, the American parent company of Bottom Dollar, said the store at 20 Shelbourne Road, Exeter Township, is one of three underperforming stores closing in the Philadelphia area.

Phillips-Brown said employees will have to apply for jobs at other stores; the company is not transferring employees to other stores.

The low-cost grocer has two other stores in Berks County, another one in Exeter, in the Reading Mall, and one on Lancaster Avenue.

Amelia’s To Open Two Stores In Cumru And Muhlenberg Townships

Amelia’s Grocery Outlet plans to open two stores in the Reading area and close its Blandon store.

Michael L. Mitchell, president and chief executive officer, said the New Holland, Lancaster County, company, announced that it expects to open a 20,000-square-foot store in Muhlenberg Plaza, previously occupied by Pet Supply Warehouse, 3260 Fifth Street Highway, Muhlenberg Township, prior to Memorial Day weekend.

At that time, Amelia’s will close its 11,000-square-foot store at 8472 Allentown Pike, Blandon.

Amelia’s also will open a 20,000-square-foot store in subdivided space of the former Weis Markets in Parkside Plaza, Cumru Township, Mitchell said.

Discount Grocer Expanding Into Southeastern Pennsylvania

A new grocery store chain is expanding into Pennsylvania.  Bottom Dollar Food, based in Salisbury, North Carolina operates 28 stores in North Carolina, Maryland and Virginia.  Bottom Dollar is as full-shop discount grocer and is affiliated with Food Lion.

According to their website:

“Customers will find Bottom Dollar Food unique because we carry national and private products, and offer outstanding quality in produce, meat and other products. We offer the best prices on groceries in the market and provide our customers a friendly, fun and lighthearted shopping experience.”

The website states that Pottstown has been identified as a location for one of the new stores in the Philadelphia Region.  1400 North Charlotte Street is the address listed for the new store (The Shoppes at Ringing Rocks – formerly Rickel’s Home Center and ShopRite).

The news release states stores will start opening this fall.  If all 21 projected stores do open, the chain will have almost doubled their number of stores.  Bottom Dollar Foods opened their first store in 2005 in High Point, North Carolina.
