Blue Bell, PA — The Dental Hygiene Clinic at Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Central Campus in Blue Bell is actively recruiting patients with periodontal, or gum, disease for the fall semester. Patients will be screened for eligibility on Monday, Jan. 25 by appointment, and those who qualify will begin treatment.

Treatment includes a complete assessment of the patient’s oral and periodontal health; dental x-rays, if necessary; education in self-care; scaling; tooth polishing; and fluoride treatment. Multiple, three-hour appointments are necessary.

MCCC’s Dental Hygiene Clinic has been providing the public with comprehensive preventive dental hygiene services since 1973. Licensed dentists and dental hygiene faculty supervise all treatment procedures in the College’s state-of-the-art laboratory. The Clinic operates September through May, by appointment, and is part of Dental Hygiene students’ clinical requirements.

MCCC to Host Free Children’s Dental Sealant Program

Blue Bell, PA — Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Dental Hygiene program and the Tierra L. Dobry Foundation will co-sponsor a free Children’s Dental Sealant program on Nov. 17 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.

The sealant program, held at MCCC’s Dental Hygiene Clinic, is a community outreach effort during which free oral examinations and sealant placement will be provided for children ages 6-14.  Space is limited, and examinations are by appointment only on a first-come, first-served basis.  Appointments can be made by calling 215-641-6483.

A dental sealant is a clear, preventive coating placed on permanent back teeth in order to prevent dental decay.  During the sealant program, preventive services will be performed by licensed dental hygienists in consultation with licensed dentists.  Auxiliary support services will be provided by the College’s dental hygiene students.

South Korean Dental Students Tour MCCC Clinic

Daejeon 1Blue Bell, Pa.—Twelve students and one instructor from Daejeon Health Sciences College in Daejeon, South Korea toured and observed procedures in Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Dental Hygiene Clinic on Feb. 2 as part of a three-day visit to the Philadelphia region.

The group has been New York City since Jan. 16 as part of a study abroad experience coordinated by Manhattan dentist Dr. Paul Sui, through which the students are experiencing dentistry and dental hygiene education as they are practiced in the United States. The group has spent time at Columbia University, New York University, and at several private dental practices.

Daejeon 2MCCC alumna Lillian Caperila, who is a manager and international presenter of professional continuing education for Premier Dental Products Co. in Plymouth Meeting, arranged the three-day Philadelphia trip, which had the students visiting University of Pennsylvania, MCCC and Premier’s manufacturing facility, along with some sight seeing.

“Daejeon Health Sciences College uses dental instruments that are manufactured right here in Philadelphia, so the students got to see how the instruments they use every day are made,” Caperila explained.

At MCCC, the Daejeon students observed MCCC students and faculty treat patients in the Dental Hygiene Clinic, located at the Central Campus in Blue Bell. Through formal and informal discussions, including a pizza lunch, both groups of students were able to about each other’s education and culture. The Daejeon students also toured the campus and met with MCCC Provost Dr. Vicki Bastecki-Perez and Dental Hygiene Program Director Jenny Sheaffer.
