Ady Cakes Opens Second Location In Manheim Township

Picture 466The owner of Ady Cakes in West Reading is perhaps best known for having won “Cupcake Wars,” a Food Network baking-competition show in May 2012.

Even though she made a name for her business on television, owner Ady Abreu, 35, West Reading, is now branching out in a first step toward creating an easily-recognizable brand.

After seven years in business on Penn Avenue, Abreu has decided to open a second location in a new shopping center in Manheim Township, Lancaster County.

“I do a lot of wedding cakes for customers in Lancaster County, and I have always had interest in my cakes from that area,” Abreu said. “So naturally the idea came out to open a store here.”

Food Trucks Are Cookin’ In Suburbs Now, Too

Editor’s note:  Nice mention of Pottstown‘s own George Bieber by the Inquirer!

“Honestly, when I started, I was thinking I would be in the city a lot, but now we’re hardly ever there,” said George Bieber, a Pottstown restaurateur who started Sunflower Truck Stop in August.

Bieber, whose truck offers gourmet sandwiches such as Green Curry Bacon BLT, Crab and Artichoke Grilled Cheese, and Sweet Potato Quesadilla, recalled that in one town, two older permitting officials eyeballed his rig as if it had landed from Mars.

“They saw that it was not just a hot dog truck, it was something different,” said Bieber, who ultimately was invited by the officials to park at the town’s Community Day.

Last year, Montgomery County licensed 76 mobile food vendors.

A shaky video shot by an 11-year-old apparently was the ticket that got the owner of Blondies cupcake bakery in Catasauqua, PA on Sunday’s episode of “Cupcake Wars.”

In the video, Rebecca Zukowski of Blondies admitted to being “tacky, flashy and loud.”

Zukowski will compete against three other bakers in a new episode of the Food Network series at 8 p.m. Sunday.

The bakers face three elimination challenges until only one remains. The winner gets $10,000 and a chance to showcase cupcakes at a party for the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, a roller derby team.
