MCCC Writers’ Club Seeks Submissions For 29th Annual Fiction And Poetry Contest
Blue Bell/Pottstown, PA— The Writers’ Club at Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) is accepting submissions for its 29th Annual Fiction and Poetry Contest now through 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 10. The contest has categories for poetry and fiction for MCCC students, as well as for alumni, faculty, staff and community residents. Prizes include $100 for first place, $75 for second, $50 for third and $25 for fourth in each category.
Mailed entries must be postmarked no later than March 3 and should be addressed to Professor Susan Buchler, English Department, Montgomery County Community College, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell, PA 19422-0758.
Hand-delivered entries should be submitted by 2 p.m. on March 10 at Professor Buchler’s office, 402 Parkhouse Hall, Central Campus, Blue Bell, where they may be left under the door. Emailed entries will not be accepted.
Guidelines for submitting poetry and fiction are as follows:
Contestants must enter the appropriate category. Categories A1 MCCC Student Poetry and A2 MCCC Student Fiction are open only to MCCC students enrolled during the fall 2015 and spring 2016 school year. Categories B1 Non-Student Poetry and B2 Non-Student Fiction are open to alumni, staff and faculty, as well as Montgomery County residents. Only one entry can be submitted for each category in either the student or non-student classification.
Submissions should be typed on 8.5 x 11-inch paper. Prose should be typed double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with one-inch margins. The maximum length is 3,000 words.
Name, address, email address and phone number must be typed on a separate title page, along with the category letter and contest entered. MCCC students must include their student identification numbers.
On all subsequent pages, the title of the work should be typed in the upper right-hand corners with the last four digits of the phone number from the title page typed underneath.
The contestant’s name should not appear on any page except for the title page, and all pages should be numbered and clipped together. Contestants may only submit one entry per category and entries will not be returned.
Winners will be notified by email, and complete results will be announced in an upcoming edition of the Writers’ Club’s The Pen and Ink Times.
New Exhibit Features Best In Show Winners At ArtFusion

Pottstown, PA – ArtFusion’s latest show MythConceptions will open on November 7 and run through November 21. This show will feature artwork from the winners of the Best in Show contest from ArtFusion’s 2015 Winter Member Show. Visitors to the show voted for their favorite artists and the two artists who received the most votes won their own show. Artists Dora Siemel and Gwendolyn Lanier-Gardner will present an amazing collection of 3D and 2D artwork. Gwendolyn and Dora invite the community to a meet the artists reception on Friday, November 13 from 6-8pm.
Dora Siemel was born in Matto Grosso, Brazil. In addition to being a sculptor, she is a poet, a computer consultant, a martial artist and a yoga instructor. Dora has had her own studio in Green Lane, Pennsylvania since 1992. Her sculpture medium is clay. The colors come from any combination of glazes, oxides, paints and waxes. Dora says, “When it feels appropriate, I incorporate found objects into my sculptures. These can be metal, fiber, bone or anything else that seems to fit with the rest of the sculpture.”
Her work has been included in various juried shows including the Pottstown Area Artists Guild’s “Art on the Hill” show, the Lansdale Festival of the Arts, the Norristown Art League, the Meadowood Art Show, the Woodmere Art Museum Show, the Phillips Mill Art Show, the New Hope Art League Show, the Bucks Byers Fever Show, the Bucks County Sculpture Show, the FODC Show and the GoggleWorks Annual Show. Her pieces have won numerous local prizes, including three “Best of Show” awards.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Gwendolyn Lanier- Gardner began making art in 2000 at the Essex Art Center in Lawrence, Massachusetts. In 2009 Gwendolyn received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Studio Arts degree at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston MA. Her primary focus as an undergraduate was Ceramics Figurative Sculpture. In 2012 she received her Post Baccalaureate in Graduate Studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia PA, where her exploration of drawing led her to her current body of work.
Gwendolyn’s art has been featured in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Lawrence Eagle Tribune, and at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts during the 2008 NCECA Confluence Conference. She has shown her work at the Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, Katherine Weems Gallery in Boston, and other galleries across the East Coast. Gwendolyn is currently a Working Artist Member and instructor at ArtFusion.
ArtFusion 19464 is a 501(c)3 non-profit community art center located at 254 E. High St. in downtown Pottstown. The school offers day, evening and weekend classes to all ages. The goal of these classes is to help students develop their creative skills through self-expression and independence. ArtFusion’s gallery hosts rotating shows featuring local artists. Pennsylvania Farm To Provide White House Christmas Tree In 2015

Searching will take place at Bustard’s Christmas Trees, the 2015 National Christmas Tree Association Grand Champion winner of the national tree contest.
Glenn & Jay Bustard and their family will present the White House Christmas Tree in November/December. The tree will be displayed in the Blue Room.
Harvest of the selected tree will take place just prior to the presentation.
Winners of the National Christmas Tree Association national tree contest have provided the official White House Christmas Tree since 1966.

Teen Artists Compete For $10,000 Arts Scholarship
POTTSTOWN, PA – On Saturday, May 16, one talented young artist will receive a $10,000 scholarship from the Greater Pottstown Foundation. This is the fifth year for the scholarship event, a partnership between ArtFusion 19464 and the Foundation. The Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the Arts is designed to financially assist a local high school senior in obtaining a degree from accredited academic institutions of higher learning for study in the arts. The applicant’s intended field of study can include a major or a minor in a visual arts-related field.
The scholarship is awarded based on two criteria. The students must first write an essay on why they want to continue their education in the arts. Then the students create three pieces of art to be displayed at the Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship Art Exhibit at ArtFusion 19464. Also on display during the exhibit will be work from other students at the participating schools.
Students from Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J. Roberts and the Hill School were eligible to apply. The 2015 applicants are Sarah Berkey, Tessa Bridges, Julianna Clark, Tyesha Lewis, Jennifer Miller, Ben Mizic, Alyssa Ott, Donna Oyella, Lexi Rodriguez, and Luke Steltz.
The show will run from May 16 through May 30 and can be seen any time during normal gallery hours: Tuesday through Friday from 10am to 5pm and Saturday 10am to 3pm. ArtFusion is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Coatesville To Celebrate 100 Years As A City
Chester County’s only city will commemorate its 100th anniversary with the Coatesville Centennial Celebration at the city’s train station located at Fleetwood Street and North Third Avenue, at 10 a.m. on April 27.
Coatesville is named after Moses Coates, a farmer and postmaster who in 1787 purchased land that now makes up the center of the city, according to http://www.Coatesville.org. A village in the area where Coates purchased land came to be known as Coates Villa, and in 1867 it merged with the neighboring village of Midway to form the Borough of Coatesville. On April 27, 1915, a majority of the borough’s residents voted in favor of granting city status to Coatesville.
The centennial celebration will begin with a performance by the Coatesville Area Senior High Marching Band. During the celebration, Aja Thompson, a CASH graduate and Coatesville Youth Initiative volunteer will read her poem, “I Love and Miss You, Coatesville.”
The winner of the Coatesville Centennial Logo Design Contest will also be announced at the event. The contest was open to students in the Coatesville Area School District, and challenged them to design a new logo to represent the city of Coatesville. The winning logo will be featured on signage, event flyers and street banners for the centennial celebration.

Application Deadline For $10,000 Art Scholarship
Pottstown, PA –The deadline to apply for the 2015 Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the arts is February 28, 2015. The scholarship is open to Pottstown, Pottsgrove, Owen J. Roberts and Hill School seniors who will be pursuing either an arts major or an arts minor in college.

Students Lead MCCC’s 2015 RecycleMania Efforts
Blue Bell/Pottstown, Pa.— Students from Montgomery County Community College’s (MCCC) Environmental Club are leading the institution’s 2015 RecycleMania efforts, a nationwide tournament among colleges and universities designed to increase student awareness of campus recycling and waste minimization.
After finishing second in Pennsylvania in the Waste Minimization category during the 2014 challenge—collecting 17.248 pounds of combined trash and recycling per capita—MCCC expects to maintain momentum in this, its eighth consecutive year of competing.
The competition kicked off on Feb. 1 and continues eight weeks through March 28.
During the program, campuses compete in different contests to see which institution can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita or have the highest recycling rate. Final results will be announced in mid-April.
In 2014, 461 colleges comprised of 6.3 million students and staff recycled and/or composted 89 million pounds of waste. In addition, Recyclemania 2014 resulted in a reduction of 126,597 metric tons of CO2 equivalent (MTCO2E). Of the totals, MCCC contributed 37,390 pounds of recycling and averaged 4.658 pounds of recycling per person each week.
According to the U.S. EPA’s Waste Reduction Model (WARM), MCCC’s recycling efforts during last year’s competition resulted in a greenhouse gas reduction of 63 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2E), which translates to the energy consumption of five households or the emissions of 12 cars.
RecycleMania is made possible through the sponsorship support of Alcoa, The Coca Cola Company and Keep America Beautiful. Additional program support is provided by the College and University Recycling Coalition (CURC), U.S. EPA Waste Wise program, Campus Conservation Nationals, and the National Wildlife Federation’s Campus Ecology program.

Lawrenceville Interior Designer Gets Some Fresh Recognition From HGTV
Her work transforming an awkward, cramped kitchen into an inviting space ideal for entertaining has earned a Pittsburgh newcomer national attention.
Interior designer Lauren Levant Bland, 32, of Lawrenceville won for “Most Dramatic Transformation” in HGTV’s Fresh Faces of Design competition identifying the Top 10 American designers under age 35.
“I was really thrilled” says Levant Bland, owner of Lauren Levant Interior. “I always like it when I know the design I’ve done pleases the client, and to think it’s also been intriguing for other people to see is a wonderful honor.”
In their search for the newest crop of up-and-coming talent, HGTV invited designers from all over the country to submit their work. A panel of industry leaders then selected finalists for awards in 10 categories, and the public voted to select the winners.

ArtsQuest Looking For Bakeries For 2014 Cupcake Bowl

ArtsQuest’s Cupcake Bowl is the definition of a “sweet Saturday.”
The annual fundraising event brings together bakeries from around the area for a day of sampling.
The 2014 event will be held 12:30-2:30 p.m. Dec. 27 at ArtsQuest Center at SteelStacks, 101 Founders Way in Bethlehem.
According to a news release, ticket sales have opened. Buy a ticket at artsquest.org or call 610-332-3378. Tickets cost $30, $25 for ArtsQuest members. Proceeds from the event will go to ArtsQuest’s Arts Education Programming Fund.

Local Senior Wins $10,000 Arts Scholarship

POTTSTOWN, PA – On Saturday, May 31, the Greater Pottstown Foundation awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Jaid Mark, a Pottsgrove High School senior. Jaid is the 2014 winner of The Greater Pottstown Foundation Scholarship for the Arts, which is designed to financially assist a local high school senior in obtaining a degree from accredited academic institutions of higher learning for study in the arts.
Jaid will be attending Philadelphia University this fall to pursue a degree in art therapy. Cynthia Scherer, her high school art teacher, said: “This young lady has a wonderful work ethic, a motivational spirit that influences others and creativity which will help her to excel in her college endeavor.”
The scholarship was awarded based on an essay and on artwork that Jaid created for a show currently on display at ArtFusion 19464. The three pieces she entered into the competition will become part of the Foundation’s permanent collection. This is the fourth year that ArtFusion has partnered with the Foundation to present this scholarship.

Mosaic Community Garden Announces Beautification Contest Winners
How it all began: In the summer of 2012, Dick Heylmun, the owner of Pine Tree Hill Farm, contacted Mosaic Community Land Trust, after learning about their work in the Community garden on Chestnut Street.
Mr Heylmun, an avid gardener himself, conceived of the idea to offer prize money to people living in the Beech to High Street, Adams to Charlotte Street area for creating beautiful street-side gardens and plantings. He knows how pretty a block can be when the residents take pride in their homes and gardens and he revels in the joy and sense of pride that gardens bring to the gardener and all who pass by.
Mosaic partnered with the Pottstown Garden club to develop, advertise and judge the contest. Flyers were distributed to all the homes in the area while the Mercury helped promote the contest in an article about both the garden contest.
With only nine entries for this competition, the first of its kind in the core neighborhood, we hope to inspire confidence in others to enter next year. The gardeners chose one of three categories and most of the entries were in the “front garden and planters combined” category.
Two members from the Pottstown Garden Club, Nancy Toothacher and Karin Albera, accompanied board member, Gretchen Lea, (who is also a Penn State Master Gardner), and Laura Washington, the MOSAIC garden manager, as they set out one very hot afternoon to walk the blocks and judge the gardens. It was hard, yet fun and rewarding.
The contestants showed a sense of pride and enthusiasm about their creations, and had a variety of reasons why they chose one plant or another and why they chose to place them where they did.
Some plants have personal meaning, like beautiful memories and experiences of the gardens and gardeners we have known and loved -they are place makers in our lives. Gardens are often creative expressions of their creators. Knowing this, while judging makes the job difficult, but all the more fun.
Asking a gardener about their gardens is like possessing the key to a box, open it up and you’ll find out something about what’s inside.
The judges passed several pretty and interesting gardens along the way and wished that those gardens had been entered in the contest too. When asked why they didn’t enter, a few folks proclaimed… “Mine is not quite good enough”. Some gardeners can be too hard on themselves. Working with nature is not easy. Nature cannot be controlled. That makes gardening all the more challenging and rewarding. I beg all who dig in the soil to keep up the confidence to keep planting. Every garden is a unique expression of the gardener.
I have entered my garden in shows and contests, even though they weren’t perfect, because others get joy in seeing them. It is rewarding to watch people blossom when they see what you have accomplished. It too is a great way to connect with one another. For me, gardening is a great reason to be outside and to work with Mother Nature as I try to express myself.

The Garden awards and prize money were presented Sunday July 14th at 5 o’clock at the MOSAIC Community Garden, followed by a get together with refreshments, conversation and friendship.

Garden by garden the Mosaic Community Land Trust’s designated areas will blossom, as the first garden has done, with people sharing stories, recipes, making new friends, learning about their gardens, trading plants and ideas while enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Montco Chef To Appear On ‘Food Network Star’

AMBLER, PA — One local man will be cooking up quite a bit of national attention for the area now that he’s earned a spot as a contestant on a new reality show this summer.
Chad Rosenthal, 37, of Ambler, has been chosen to appear as a contestant on the Food Network’s ninth season of the “Food Network Star” competition, which begins airing Sunday, June 2, at 9 p.m.
Featuring celebrity judge mentors Alton Brown, Bobby Flay and Giada De Laurentiis, the show pits 12 contestants against one another in a series of weekly challenges for a chance to earn their own television show on the channel.
Born and raised in Upper Dublin, Rosenthal said he’s putting his hopes for stardom on his highly popular barbecue comfort food-style menu. The owner of the former Rosie’s restaurants in Jenkintown and Ambler said patrons said his face belonged on the small screen.

Lititz Wins Coolest Small Town In America Contest

“Free Moravian Sugar Cake and Wilbur Buds for Everyone???” Sandy Hendricks Morris proposed on the Downtown Lititz Facebook page.
Lititz and those who love it were in a celebratory mood Saturday after learning it really is “America’s Coolest Small Town.”
The borough north of Lancaster, known for its chocolate, pretzels and Moravian heritage, won Budget Travel‘s online contest after nearly 100,000 votes were cast for 924 towns.
Self-described Lititz “cheerleader” Gaylord Poling said he learned of the honor Friday evening on the Budget Travel website.
