Catch ‘Jurassic World’ Drive-In Movie Screening On Oct. 10 at MCCC

Blue Bell, Pa.—Oct. 10 is the rescheduled date for the “Jurassic World” drive-in movie screening, presented by Montgomery County Community College (MCCC) and Whitpain Township’s Department of Parks and Recreation. Heavy rains caused the screening to be moved from its original date of Sept. 17.

The film will begin at dusk on Oct. 10 in the Morris Road parking lot at MCCC’s Central Campus, 340 DeKalb Pike, Blue Bell. Admission is $10 per car for the general public and is $5 with a valid MCCC student/faculty/staff ID. Concessions will be available for purchase.

The fourth installment in the Jurassic series, “Jurassic World” is set 22 years after the events of “Jurassic Park” on the same fictional island of Isla Nublar, where a fully-functioning dinosaur theme park has operated for 10 years. The park plunges into chaos when a genetically modified dinosaur breaks loose and runs rampant across the island.

The film is directed by Colin Trevorrow and stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, Vincent D’Onofrio, Ty Simpkins, Nick Robinson, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong and Irrfan Khan. “Jurassic World” is rated PG-13 and runs two hours, four minutes.

Study: Mohegan Sun Arena Pumped $62 Million Into Economy In 2013

WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, PA  — A new study reveals that Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza contributed $62.6 million to the economy in 2013, and expansion of the concourse is expected to pump in an additional $7 million this year.
 
The Northeastern Pennsylvania Alliance was contracted by the Luzerne County Convention Center Authority, the governing body of the arena, in May 2014 to conduct the study on behalf of the authority. The NEPA Alliance released the study Thursday.
 
The economic impact analysis considers three things:
 
The overall impact of the operations of the arena, which includes the impact from visitors traveling from outside the impact region (farther than 15 miles).

The Harlem Wizards Are Coming To Pottstown

The Foundation for Pottstown Education is hosting a fundraising event in the Strom Gymnasium at Pottstown High School on Friday, March 27, 2015.  The HARLEM WIZARDS Basketball Team is coming to town!

Members of our staff, alumni and students are being recruited to play against the Wizards.  There will be plenty of fun, food, and prizes!

The elementary school that sells the most tickets to the event (over 200) will receive $1,000 from the Foundation! Either the Middle School or High School will receive $1,500 from the Foundation for selling the most tickets (over 250)! The checks for the winning two schools will be presented on Friday, March 27 at the game!

Seriously stupendous news today, Philadelphia. This June, the Delaware River Waterfront will morph into Spruce Street Harbor Park, taking the perennial good times of summer on Penn’s Landing — outdoor concerts, movies, fireworks — to a whole new level.

From Friday, June 27 through Sunday, August 31, the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation — the folks that brought us this past winter’s Waterfront Winterfest at the Blue Cross RiverRink — transforms the Penn’s Landing Marina at Columbus Boulevard and Spruce Street into a pop-up summertime village.

Penn’s Landing has long been an awesome hub of good times in the summer months, with annual programming like the PECO multicultural festival series, concerts at the RiverStage, Screenings Under the Stars and Smooth Jazz Summer Nights.

Job/Volunteer Fair – Steel River Playhouse In Pottstown

Steel River Playhouse, is holding a Job and Volunteer Fair on Sunday, July 28th from 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and Monday, July 29th from 4:30 PM to 9:00 PM.  Interested candidates will have the opportunity to learn about open positions, meet with Steel River’s leadership, and tour the facility.

Paid and stipend positions include Education Coordinator, Music Coordinator, Tech Director, Concessions/Retail Manager, Stage and Music Directors, Production Designers (e.g., sets, costumes, lighting, sound, props, hair and makeup), and Stage Managers. Instructors of music, voice, and acting are also encouraged to apply for future positions that are expected to become available.  Adults and students from middle school age on up can explore a host of volunteer learning and social opportunities in virtually every area of the performing arts center.  High school and college students are also eligible to sign up for internship opportunities to satisfy their volunteer or external learning requirements. Some examples of volunteer opportunities include:

Technical theater (set construction and painting, costuming, lighting and sound operation, props, hair and make-up)

Stage management and backstage run crew

Production Assistants

House management and ushers

Music support, especially piano accompaniment

Riser moves, maintenance and repairs

Administrative support (such as receptionist, phone support, filing, photocopying)

Software and data entry/utilization

Concession and retail sales

Box office

Education support/teacher aides

Event planning and hosting

Fundraising

Marketing and public relations (including social media)

Graphic design

Literary analysis and dramaturgy

Candidates for paid and stipend positions may sign up for initial interview slots ahead of time by contacting marta@steelriver.org or are welcome to request an interview slot on the day of their visit. Additional interviews may be scheduled at other times for those who are not available during the Job and Volunteer Fair.  Department representatives will also be on hand to meet with volunteer candidates to provide information and answer questions.

Steel River also welcomes area performers to visit during the Job and Volunteer Fair to learn more about Steel River’s mission and facilities.  A variety of audition opportunities and instrumental openings are available for the upcoming season.  Come learn about sharing your talent with the community.

At Caterpillar, Pressing Labor While Business Booms

JOLIET, Ill. — When it comes to dealing with labor unions,Caterpillar has long taken a stance as tough as the bulldozers and backhoes that have burnished its global reputation.  Be it two-tier wage scales or higher worker contributions for health insurance, the company has been a leader in devising new ways to cut labor costs, with other manufacturers often imitating its strategies.

Now, in what has become a test case in American labor relations, Caterpillar is trying to pioneer new territory, seeking steep concessions from its workers even when business is booming.

Despite earning a record $4.9 billion profit last year and projecting even better results for 2012, the company is insisting on a six-year wage freeze and a pension freeze for most of the 780 production workers at its factory here.  Caterpillar says it needs to keep its labor costs down to ensure its future competitiveness.

The company’s stance has angered the workers, who went on strike 12 weeks ago.  “Considering the offer they gave us, it’s a strike we had to have,” said Albert Williams, a 19-year Caterpillar employee, as he picketed in 99-degree heat outside the plant, which makes hydraulic parts and systems essential for much of the company’s earth-moving machinery.

2011 Fleetwood High School Holiday Craft Show This Saturday!

This year’s Fleetwood High School Holiday Craft Show will be held on Saturday, November 19^th from 9am to 3pm.  There will be approximately 115 vendors!

There will be a concession stand, pictures with Santa, a silent auction, gift wrapping, and a raffle to benefit Friend, Inc.  Individuals that bring a canned good item will receive a free raffle ticket. 

Weaver’s Hardware in Fleetwood has donated an $800 Penn State grill to be raffled off.  The cost of this raffle will be $5.00 per ticket or 3 tickets for $12.00  All proceeds will be donated to Friend, Inc. in Kutztown.

Boyertown And Upper Perk Teachers Vote For Wage Freeze

The Boyertown and Upper Perk teachers have agreed to a wage free to help both districts plug their budget deficits.  The savings realized will be in the millions of dollars!

Boyertown has a $6.5 million budget deficit and Upper Perkiomen has a $1.5 million deficit.  Boyertown teachers agreed to forgo raises for this year and next year.  This will save the district about $3 million each year. 

Upper Perkiomen teachers approved a wage freeze for the 2012-2013 school year.  This should save the Upper Perk nearly $500,000 dollars.

Pottstown administrators have agree to a wage freeze but we are still waiting to see what direction the contract negotiations will take with the teacher’s union.
