ATLANTIC CITY, NJ – This resort faces the prospect of having four major vacancies on its famed Boardwalk come mid-September.

The grim reality sank in July 14 when Trump Plaza issued layoff notices and targeted Sept. 16 as the date to cease operating as a casino.

Perception is reality in tourism, experts say, and the Boardwalk is synonymous with Atlantic City. How will four hulking, empty buildings sit with visitors – especially at night – and will they impede tourism when Atlantic City needs it the most?

“When an area goes dark, and there are increased vacancies, it generally sends out more than a subtle message that things are not promising on the horizon,” said Don Moliver, dean of the Leon Hess Business School at Monmouth University.

Pennsylvania School Of Business Closing In Allentown

With its enrollment battered by the recent elimination of federal aid to students who lack high school diplomas, the Pennsylvania School of Business in Allentown will close next year, the school announced Thursday.

“We lost 50 percent of our incoming people,” PSB President Michael O’Brien said.

While it enrolled all types of students, the school specialized in helping those without high school degrees, O’Brien said.  With federal aid to those students eliminated as of July 1, 2012, enrollment plunged.  Over the last few days, school officials decided to close the doors in January, after the fall semester.

O’Brien informed students of the decision Thursday.

Borders Going Out Of Business!!!!

The long decline of bookseller Borders Group is finally coming to an end.  It was announced Monday, July 18th, that the chain’s remaining 400 stores will all close and nearly 11,000 employees will lose their jobs.

The sale of Borders to Najafi Companies fell through after creditors objected to part of the $435 million deal.  Books-A-Million, the nation’s third-largest book retailer, may be interested in purchasing a few of the locations (30).

Borders was the second-largest bookstore chain in the U.S.
