MCCC Phi Theta Kappa Chapters Earn National Accolades

Blue Bell/Pottstown, Pa.— Montgomery County Community College’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) chapters have achieved the distinction of Five Star Status this spring during the organization’s annual convention in San Antonio, Texas on April 16-18.

Alpha Kappa Zeta, based at the Central Campus in Blue Bell, and Beta Tau Lambda, based at the West Campus in Pottstown, both earned the highest level of recognition by progressing through PTK’s Five Star Chapter Development Plan.

As part of the plan, PTK chapter officers must develop and execute a business plan that optimizes the benefits and programs offered by their chapter while furthering the mission of Phi Theta Kappa nationally.  Incorporated into the program are basic chapter administration, regional activities, an international service program, an honors study topic, Hallmark Awards, international activities and a college project.

In addition to achieving Five Star Status, Beta Tau Lambda (Pottstown) was named a Middle States Region Gold Chapter for increasing student membership and engagement over the past year.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society whose purpose is to recognize and encourage scholarship among students attending two-year colleges. To be eligible for membership, students must maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above and must have completed at least 12 credits.

MCCC’s PTK chapters operate through the College’s Office of Student Leadership and Involvement.

Lancaster Central Market Trust Looks Ahead With Strategic Plan

With the yearlong, $7 million renovation of Lancaster’s Central Market behind them, the operators of the historic market paused.

“After we took a breath, we said: ‘What comes next? Where are we going,’ ” said Peter Olmsted, chairman of the Lancaster Central Market Trust.

The result was a strategic plan that looks both inward at operations of the 123-year-old public market house and outward at the surrounding community.

The strategic plan, developed early this year, will guide the nonprofit organization for the next three years. It was unveiled Wednesday at the trust’s annual meeting in Southern Market Center.

Blogger Announces Scholarship For Pottstown Entrepreneurs

Positively!Pottstown, a community blog dedicated to promoting Pottstown, is offering two $100 scholarships for an upcoming Small Business Workshop Series taught by members of Pottstown SCORE. Positively Pottstown scholarships are available to anyone who is already running a business in Pottstown or who is planning to open a business in Pottstown.

“I wanted to offer something specific to the small business entrepreneur who is trying to make it in Pottstown,” said Sue Repko, founder of the community blog that promotes Pottstown. “I guess it’s a holiday gift to a couple of deserving business owners to start 2011 off on the right foot.”

SCORE is the Service Corps of Retired Executives, a nonprofit association sponsored by the U.S. Small Business Association. Course instructors are experienced practitioners who teach practical, real-life skills and strategies for those interested in starting a business or learning how to run their business better. By attending a SCORE workshop, entrepreneurs will also be introduced to a network of supportive professionals who want to see you succeed. “The folks at SCORE have been great to work with. They’re such a valuable resource, and they’re right in town,” added Repko.

The next workshop series will be held on January 10, 17, 24 and 31, 2011. Registration begins at 6:45 pm for all workshops, which then run from 7-9:30 pm. The course includes a manual on preparing a business plan.

January 10 – Sources of Information, and the Tax and Legal Implications of the Different Legal Structures

January 17 – The Business Plan and The Business Loan

January 24 – Sources of Market Information and Marketing

January 31 – It’s All About Profit
