Charlie Zahm is one of the most sought-after Celtic singers on the East Coast. Those who attended last year really enjoyed his concert.

Pottstown, PA – Local singer-songwriter Mike Holliday will perform two original one act plays in ArtFusion’s main gallery on Saturday, October 19. The performance will begin at 8pm. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at ArtFusion’s 254 E. High St. location. Tickets are cash only. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit community art center.
The first piece Mike will perform is titled Marching Back to Woodstock and is a journey of hope in songs and stories. This show is filled with songs and personal insights about peace, the ecology, and social awareness. It is meant to reawaken the spirit of the march and ask people to take that first step.
The second piece is Coffeehouse Songs & Diner Stories, a mixed menu of songs and stories. This show is filled some of Mike’s more personal songs and stories. Some will touch your funny bone. Some will touch your heart.
Mike Holliday is a singer-songwriter from Pottstown PA and has been singing for a long time. Only recently has he pursued it full time. Mike has performed at Listen Live Music in Macungi, PA, Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA, Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville, PA, and Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA, among others.
ArtFusion 19464 is a 501(c)3 non-profit community art center located at 254 E. High St. in downtown Pottstown. The school offers day, evening and weekend classes to all ages. The goal of these classes is to help students develop their creative skills through self-expression and independence. ArtFusion’s gallery hosts rotating shows featuring local artists. The gallery also sells handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gift items. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday.
If Pottstown High School and Ursinus College alum Samantha Marcheskie has her way, we may soon be addressing her as “Miss Pennsylvania.”
If things go very well, she might even carry the title of “Miss USA” or “Miss Universe.”
“That is my goal,” said the 2007 PHS graduate during a recent interview.
This is only Marcheskie’s third pageant, having given it a try when she was 13 and again in 2004 when she competed for Miss Teen USA.

The lead singer of a classic rock band that is among the biggest-selling of all time – and who also had six Top 20 solo hits — will complete the lineup for the opening week of the Sands Bethlehem Event Center, the venue just announced.
Glenn Frey, who sang The Eagles’ breakthrough hit “Take It Easy” and No. 1 songs “New Kid in Town” and “Heartache Tonight,” then topped the charts solo with “The Heat is On” and “You Belong to the City,” will play the event center on May 18, the venue announced on its website, www.sandseventcenter.com.

Our 2011-2012 MUSIC AT EMMANUEL season is full of variety, excitement, youth, passion and above all – musical excellence. We are thrilled to present artists that range from our finest regional talent to a pianist from the other side of the world! Our season will include an organist who studied and teaches at the world famous Julliard School in New York City, an exciting young singer, one of America’s oldest musical ensembles, a choir from the renowned Westminster Choir College, and a Ukrainian pianist who was a stand-out at the Moscow Conservatory. Dr. Lewis maintains an active career as an organist, conductor and educator. At The Juilliard School, Matthew Lewis completed the Doctor of Musical Arts degree as a student of Jon Gillock. While earning the Master of Music degree, also at Juilliard, he was the winner of the organ competition, resulting in a performance of Barber’s Toccata Festiva with the Juilliard Symphony in Alice Tully Hall. Dr. Lewis is the former recipient of a Fulbright Grant and the Annette Kade Fellowship from the Council of International Education for study in Paris where he was a student of organ-virtuoso Marie-Madeleine Duruflé. CHORAL ARTISTRY – Westminster Kantorei

Our season finale features an outstanding ensemble from the renowned Westminster Choir College. Founded in 2004, Westminster Kantorei is a chamber choir specializing in music of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, with occasional forays into later repertoire – including new works. Recent seasons have included performances of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion with the Westminster Choir and the New York Philharmonic, a program of American choral music presented as part of the 1783 Revolutionary Princeton celebration, and “Miracolo d’Amore,” an exploration of works by Claudio Monteverdi, performed in New York City. Dr. Andrew Megill, the founder and director of this ensemble, is recognized as one of the leading conductors of his generation. He currently teaches at Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ and has been a guest conductor and teacher at the Julliard School and Yale University. In addition to his work as an educator, he is currently the conductor of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra Chorus, the Carmel Bach Festival Choir, the early music ensemble Fuma Sacra, and the Masterwork Chorus in NJ.

Harrisburg’s Midtown area is undergoing an arts/culture/entertainment renaissance aimed at transforming Midtown into a destination for Central Pennsylvania residents and beyond. This article gives some great insight on what is to come and details on this important project!

A vacant property is set to become the new home of the Susquehanna Art Museum in Midtown Harrisburg. Midtown is a neighborhood in transition. If you recall my 3rd in the Burg post, I touched on Harrisburg’s emerging arts and cultural scene. This neighborhood has become a focal point of urban renewal and revitalization by making itself a “destination” that is attracting people to Harrisburg.
Millions of dollars are being poured into Midtown redevelopment. Creative business owners like Midtown Scholar Bookstore, Midtown Cinema, Midtown Harrisburg Arts Center and a growing list of restaurants and cafés are also leading the way. The addition of the Susquehanna Art Museum will strengthen the fledgling district and attract more business to the area. Having events like 3rd in the Burg already in place will only accelerate revitalization efforts.
Another huge addition to Midtown will be the new federal courthouse that will break ground in 2013. The $130 million building will bring an influx of workers into the neighborhood that have disposable income to spend on things like food and arts/culture, along with other businesses that will sprout up as the result of all this development. The site of the new federal courthouse is now a parking lot.
GreenWorks Development has been busy spending redevelopment dollars in Midtown. They own a large amount of property in the neighborhood, including the new museum site. In addition to the $50 million they have spent thus far, they plan to spend another $75 million on future projects. Harrisburg Area Community College and Fulton Bank have already benefited from GreenWorks’ projects. A four-story Campus Green building, costing $14.3 million, is another project that has benefited Midtown. GreenWorks is also involved with residential development by creating affordable and market-priced housing in Midtown, which will be critical for Midtown’s continued redevelopment.
Midtown Development has also been a player in this neighborhood’s revitalization efforts by renovating blighted properties.
Local business owners and residents are optimistic. Most see a bright future for Midtown. There are always some skeptics and detractors, but the majority of residents see these changes as taking their neighborhood in the right direction. There is still a long road ahead and things take time, but tangible progress is being made to revitalize Midtown Harrisburg and make it “the place to be” in Pennsylvania’s capital city.

The Schuylkill River Festival will be held here in Pottstown next Saturday from 11 am to 4 pm in Riverfront Park near the West Campus of MCCC. Arts, crafts, kids activities, music and food will abound. Best of all, it’s free!
