– The Working Artists Members of ArtFusion 19464 are competing for an incredible Best in Show award. The two artists who receive the most Best in Show votes will win their own show in the ArtFusion gallery in the fall of 2016. The contest is taking place during the annual Winter Member Show, an always wonderful collection of different styles and mediums, created by artists living in the greater Pottstown community.

Visitors to the gallery are asked to choose their favorite artist and make a donation in support of that artist winning Best in Show. Each $1 donation counts as one vote. Supporters can vote as many times as they like, for as many artists as they like. For those who can’t come to the show in person, online voting is available at the ArtFusion website, artfusion19464.org. Online voting ends on March 3. Visitors can also in person at ArtFusion up until 7pm on March 4, which the night of the reception and award ceremony. All proceeds from this fundraiser help support the non-profit community art center.

The reception will be held Friday, March 4 from 6-8pm in ArtFusion’s main gallery. Light refreshments will be served and the reception is free and open to the public. Please RSVP by calling 610-326-2506.

Free Art Programs‏ Offered At ArtFusion 19464

POTTSTOWN, PA – In addition to their regular class schedule, ArtFusion is very proud to offer six free programs during their winter spring session of classes. Two programs for kids are sponsored by The Greater Pottstown Foundation. For kids ages 8-12, Art Academy is a general arts exploration class where students work with many different mediums, and Clay Academy teaches students how to create with clay. Both classes begin February 26. The application deadline for these two programs is February 5, but applications will still be accepted until the programs are full.

Three teen programs are also sponsored by The Greater Pottstown Foundation. Teen Mixed Media Studio will introduce teens 13-17 to pottery, glass, drawing, painting and recycled art.  Mixed Media Studio begins April 6. Teen Clay Academy, which begins April 22, allows teens to explore both handbuilding and wheel work. The application deadline for both programs is March 16.

Poetry in Place is a brand new program that engages students in reading and listening to contemporary American poetry, including song lyrics.  Students will also participate in experiential activities, exploring how poetic devices help the poet and reader connect. This program begins on March 18 and has an application deadline of March 4.

Stretch, Read, Create! is a free program sponsored by the First Presbyterian Church and the Mary N. Porter Designated Fund of the Community Foundation of Broward County. In this fun program, preschoolers 3 to 5 years old and their parent will participate in a short yoga session, listen to a story and then create an art project based on the book. Classes currently run from 10:30am-11:30am on Wednesdays. This program is free but ArtFusion asks that you RSVP to 610-326-2506. There are a limited number of available spaces.

Applications can be downloaded at artfusion19464.org/classes/scholarshipsprograms/. Interested parents can also stop by 254 E. High St. to pick up a paper copy.  Spaces will be filled on a first come, first served basis. While ArtFusion encourages everyone who is interested to apply, those students who qualify for free or reduced lunch and those who have not attended a free program before will be given priority.

Dora Siemel Wins Best in Show Honors At Gallery On High’s “Re-Creative” Art Show

Pottstown, PA  –  Local Artist Wins Best In Show

Artist Dora Siemel received Best in Show honors for her piece, Buy More Stuff!, at a reception at the Gallery on High, Saturday, April 14.  Dora and 19 other local artists participated in Re-Creative, a recycled art show.  Entries in this show had to be created from recycled, upcycled or salvaged materials.

The $100 prize was sponsored by the National Association of Remodelers-Building Industries Exchange (NARI-BIE) Green Team.  Green Team member Christine Elliott awarded the prize.  The Green Team judges had the following to say about the winning entry:

Buy New Stuff!. . . stood out to the judges as a lively piece of art, steeped in the nostalgia of quality American manufacturing, while poking fun at our current culture which thrives on poorly made goods and constant consumerism.  While strong social messages are observed within this piece, it also stands alone as an artistic historic tribute.  The artful arrangement of materials from consumer products is delightful and the reclaimed nature of the materials strictly followed the theme of the show.  The reverse form inherent in the newspaper type elements used added an intriguing, reflective symbolism to this piece.  The piece takes us on a journey into our past, as it prods us to seriously consider our future.

Local Artists Celebrate Recycled Art

The Gallery on High will host a reception on April 14 to celebrate their spring show Re-Creative.  The reception will last from noon until 2pm and light refreshments will be served. At 1:30 pm, a Best in Show prize will be awarded.  This $100 prize is generously sponsored by the Building Industries Exchange of Pottstown and Vicinity’s Green Team. All Gallery receptions are free and open to the public.
 
Entries in this show had to be created from recycled, upcycled or salvaged materials.  The artists created an incredible array of work.  The recycled origins of some pieces are immediately apparent, while other pieces have a more subtle message.  The theme of Re-Creative is wonderfully invoked in this show, as the artists each took something that is normally overlooked, thrown out or dismissed
and reimagined that item.
 
Participating artists include: Robyn Burckhardt, Jann Everett DeChristopher, Natalie Cyphers, Susan Ploppert, Christine Burnley, Millie Lea, Gail Ann Herring, Sara Benowitz, Dora Siemel, Bob Hakun, Jon Parker, Joe Hoover, Danielle D’Aries, Florence Mano, Lisbeth Bucci, Donna Steck-McMahon, Maggie Creshkoff, Sue Eyet, Norah Cannon and Julie Tonnessen.

Gallery School Of Pottstown To Offer Spring Classes

Pottstown, PA – Come out of winter hibernation and celebrate the arrival of spring!  The Gallery School has great classes starting in April.  Engage your child in the arts with Creative Kids, a wonderful drawing and painting class, for ages 7 – 12, beginning on April 9.  Kids learn to create in glass with Fused Glass Suncatcher on April 14 or May 14.  For the young artist age 3-6, our Cray Pas class begins April 6.

Get your hands dirty too!  Our Mom and Me Pottery class is the perfect opportunity for a parent and child to create together.  Mom and Me Pottery begins April 7.  Rolley Poley Pals, on April 16, and a fun Canvas Tote class, on May 7, teach your child how to sew.  Does your child love manga or like to draw cartoon characters?  Then our Cartooning class, beginning April 7, is the perfect choice.  Teens can learn to express themselves through art in Teen Studio, beginning April 7 or April 9. 

We didn’t forget the adults either!  Join Introduction to Drawing, beginning April; 7, or learn to use watercolors, oils and pastels in Draw and Paint Studio, starting April 5.  Turn beautiful glass and tiles into art with Mosaics; you can join this fun class on April 2 or April 5.  Our Open Studio Fused Glass class allows beginners to create gorgeous glass art.  If fiber arts are more your style, try our Yo-Yo Flag class on April 5 and 7.

The Gallery School of Pottstown & Gallery on High – A Pottstown Jewel

Pottstown is most fortunate to have an art school and art gallery on our main street.  The Gallery School of Pottstown & Gallery on High, located at 254 E. High Street, is a non-profit organization that includes a gallery featuring local/national/international art as well as an art school. 

The school’s main mission is to provide a solid educational foundation to youth and adults.  This school operates regardless of income levels as there are scholarships and tuition assistance available.  Classes are small and taught by professional artists to make sure students receive as much personal attention as possible.  The Gallery also has an after-school program, special programs during the school year and summer programs.

There are two galleries which showcase exhibits.  The upstairs gallery features a more permanent exhibit by member artists.  The downstairs gallery hosts theme exhibits and member exhibits which change often.  Styles and mediums vary.  Exhibits are open to the public and free of charge.

The Gallery on High’s Community and Education Partners are Creative Health Services, Inc., Pottstown School District and Brookside Montessori.

One way Pottstown will go about revitalization is to involve the arts.  Establishing and supporting an arts community will make Pottstown a destination that draws visitors from outside the borough into Pottstown to attend events.  The spin-off from hosting events is the additional spending that occurs in local bars, restaurants and shops.  The Gallery on High compliments the TriPAC Performing Arts Center, the Pottstown Symphony and other existing arts/cultural organizations in Pottstown.  The ability to attract and retain artists as residents, by providing assistance programs and housing/studio space, will fuel Pottstown’s efforts to become a destination.
