Troopers Investigate String Of Break-Ins In Eastern Berks

State police at Reading are investigating a rash of burglaries in eight townships they cover in eastern Berks County.

In recent weeks there have been burglaries in Alsace, Ruscombmanor, Earl, Oley, Rockland, Pike, District and Hereford townships, Trooper David C. Beohm said.

Some occurred during daylight hours.

“People can help us by paying attention to their neighbors’ properties,” Beohm said.  “If they see a strange car in a neighbor’s driveway, give us a call and we’ll go out and check it out.

Local Bakers’ Angel Food Cake Judged Heavenly

The key to a good angel food cake is timing.

That’s what Robert Wenger says.

The eggs must be kept at the right temperature, you can’t over beat them and you have to keep a careful eye over the cake while it’s in the oven, he said.

Those tips helped Wenger of Adamstown take home third place in the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s Incredible Angel Food Cake Contest.

Boyertown Man Charged In Alsace Killing

Is there something in the air or water around here lately???

A Boyertown man was arrested at his home Friday about six hours after state police say he fatally shot a friend during an argument at an Alsace Township home.

Robert W. Pfanders Jr., 25, of the 300 block of East Third Street surrendered to troopers who surrounded his residence about 9:30 a.m., investigators said.

He was committed to Berks County Prison without bail following arraignment before District Judge Kim Bagenstose late Friday on homicide charges. He told the judge at Reading Central Court that he is single and a landscaper.
