A South Side man accused of heading a drug ring that regularly brought in truckloads of cocaine and other drugs from January 2011 and until this September pleaded not guilty Thursday to a drug conspiracy charge.

Luis M. “Weezy” Carde, 41, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Maureen Kelly, who ordered him held without bail.

Other than answering the judge’s questions, Carde didn’t speak during the hearing. His attorney, Marvin Miller, declined comment.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Craig Haller said Carde should be kept in jail because he’s a flight risk and a danger to the community.

An altercation at Levelz Sports Lounge in the South Side early today led to one man being critically stabbed and another having his hand cut when he tried to intervene, Pittsburgh police reported.

The suspect in the stabbings, Manuel Carde Freiria, 40, of South Side, was taken into custody by both on-duty and off-duty police officers, said police spokeswoman Diane Richard.

According to a criminal complaint, witnesses saw Mr. Freiria stab Jay Barbour, an off-duty Levelz employee, during a scuffle that occurred after Mr. Barbour asked Mr. Carde Freiria not to smoke inside of the establishment.  Mr. Barbour was stabbed in the abdomen so severely that witnesses saw him holding his entrails to his body.  He was transferred to Mercy Hospital in critical condition.

The second victim, Seth Edmunds, was stabbed in the right hand trying to break up the fight. He also was treated at Mercy.

Editor’s note:  Speaking of strip searches and WTF moments!

PITTSBURGH – Attorneys for western Pennsylvania‘s largest county jail are defending their decision to pay $3 million to settle a class action involving 1,600 inmates who were strip searched before doing time for minor offenses, even though the U.S. Supreme Court decided such searches are legal earlier this week.

The 2010 settlement involving the Allegheny County Jail included payments to any inmates strip searched for a minor offense between July 13, 2004 and March 18, 2008. About 12,000 inmates were believed to have been eligible for the money, but only a fraction responded with class action claims. Those inmates divided the money remaining after deducting $1 million in attorneys’ fees and another $265,000 went to pay a firm that processed the claims.
