 — When a BP oil well began gushing crude into the Gulf of Mexico four years ago, fisherman George Barisich used his boat to help clean up the millions of gallons that spewed in what would become the worst offshore spill in U.S. history.

Like so many Gulf Coast residents who pitched in after the April 20, 2010, explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig, Barisich was motivated by a desire to help and a need to make money — the oil had destroyed his livelihood.

Today he regrets that decision, and worries his life has been permanently altered. Barisich, 58, says respiratory problems he developed during the cleanup turned into pneumonia and that his health has never been the same.

“After that, I found out that I couldn’t run. I couldn’t exert fast a walk,” he said. His doctor declined to comment.

Editor’s note:  GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!

NEW ORLEANS — Oil giant BP has agreed to pay the largest criminal penalty in U.S. history, totaling billions of dollars, for the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, a person familiar with the deal said today.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record about the deal, also said two BP employees face manslaughter charges over the death of 11 people in the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig that triggered the massive spill.

The person said BP will plead guilty to obstruction for lying to Congress about how much oil was pouring out of the ruptured well.  The person declined to say exactly how much the fine in the billions of dollars would be.

BP made a net profit of $5.5 billion in the third quarter, it reported last month.

BP Finally Caps Well!

It only took 85 days but the oil flow into the Gulf of Mexico has finally stopped!

Now comes the really hard part.  Trying to fix the ecological nightmare that has been created!

The Arrogance Of British Petroleum

Check out this jackalope from British Petroleum’s asinine statement regarding his company’s perpetration of an ecological disaster of biblical proportion.

British Petroleum (BP) rep Randy Prescott made a comment to those worried restaurateurs facing rising prices for shrimp and oysters, “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp!” His office phone number is (713) 323-4093; his email is randy.prescott@bp.com.  Give Randy a call or send an email and give this insensitive clod a piece of your mind.  Snopes.com is confirming this is a true statement.   Getting seafood from further away will cost restaurants more money AND the fact that seafood is available from places other than Louisiana does not help all those out of work fishermen.  Now does it Randy!

No matter in what “context” this remark was made, it is just more evidence that British Petroleum is not putting this disaster in perspective.  If it was an American company that did this in the North Sea and oil was all over England, Scotland and Wales, we would be the great capitalist Satan etc…

Plug the damn hole!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BP’s Latest Effort To Stop Oil-Flow Fails!

BP’s latest heavy mud effort to stop the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico has failed.  The oil flow was too much for the heavy mud to cap the well.

So until next week, oil will continue to pour in the ocean unabated (18 million gallons and growing).  Next week BP will try a new untested procedure to cap the well.  This procedure involves a robot and cutting of the end of a pipe and placing a cap and seal over it.  It could take 4 – 7 days to complete.

The is now the largest oil spill in US history and growing daily.  The ecological and economic impact of this fiasco will be felt for 50 years!  Up to 40 million gallons of oil could wind up in the Gulf before all is said and done.

The White House stated the leak is enraging as well as heartbreaking.

BP Narrows Oil Leaks From Three To Two

First of all, I didn’t realize there was more than one leak!  The biggest oil leak is still gushing!  The plan is to lower a 4 story containment dome over the worst leak and then hopefully concentrate on the last one.  The dome will allow the oil to be funneled up to a rig on the surface.

Meanwhile, the weather is finally cooperating!  Other methods of containment include a controlled burn of oil on the surface, skimmers, barriers and floating devices used to corral oil.  The most risky method is the chemical dispersant idea.  There is a link to that story below.

Off-Shore Oil Spill Threatens Louisiana

A massive oil spill is threatening the Louisiana coastline.  BP has been unable to stop the massive flow of oil (210,000 gallons a day) from a well explosion that is leaking from as deep as a mile underwater.  The government is now getting involved because of BP’s inability to solve their own problem.  BP is responsible for the $6 million dollar a day price tag.

One third of the nation’s seafood comes from Louisiana and the delta area is in great danger.  This could eclipse the Exxon Valdez spill if not contained soon.  Oil has already reached the coastline which is teaming with wildlife.

Louisiana has never fully recovered from Katrina.  This disaster could not come at a worse time.
