Summertime, and the livin’‍ is … steamy?

Welcome to Summer 2014 as The Old Farmer’s Almanac and its rival publication, the Farmers’‍ Almanac, forecast it.

Summer, which officially began at 6:51 a.m. today will be scorching hot and unbearably humid with thunderstorms soaking here and throughout the entire eastern section of the United States, the publications predict.

Wait. You don’t like that? Then perhaps you’‍d prefer the National Weather Service’s more temperate long-range prediction. Its forecast says the Pittsburgh region likely will have a typical summer for temperature and precipitation.

First Hays Eaglet Fledges, 2 Still In The Nest

The first of the three Hays eaglets took flight Friday on national Bald Eagle Day, designated by Congress to celebrate the successful recovery of the bald eagle in North America.

At 10:14 a.m., eagle watchers monitoring live video from a wildlife camera watched as one of the three eaglets hopped off a tree branch behind foliage and exited the picture in its first flight. People gathered on the Great Allegheny Passage trail reported the adolescent eagle soared near the nest accompanied by its mother.

“Yes, we can confirm this. It’s a fledging,” said Bill Powers, president of PixController, the security camera company that donated the camera in partnership with the Pennsylvania Game Commission.

Man Killed In Saturday Morning Shooting In Manheim Township

A man was killed in a shooting Saturday morning in Manheim Township.

According to emergency dispatches, the man was transported to a hospital about 3:50 a.m. for a gunshot wound.

The incident reportedly happened in the area of the 800 block of New Holland Avenue, just outside the city.

Officials confirmed Saturday at 10:30 a.m. that the man has died.

Riverfest Flows Through The Weekend

She ain’t exactly a thrill ride, and she ain’t always pretty.

And in the past she’s been downright mean.

But the Susquehanna River belongs to the region, and plenty of people love her just the same.

Dozens of them kicked off Riverfest 2014 Friday with a kayak trip, paddling several miles from West Pittston to Nesbitt Park in Wilkes-Barre.
