The Lehigh River Blues Jam is a three day, family oriented, celebration of the blues presented by the 2nd Story Blues Alliance and the borough of Catasaqua.

Immediately following this event on June 22, is the 2nd Story Blues Alliance International Blues Challenge held at Pitcher’s Sports Bar and Grill.

The Lehigh River Blues Jam helps raise awareness for 2nd Story Blues Alliance’s new 3 Chords Medical and Insurance Member Advocacy Program and the John Ott Sr. Fund for musicians who need medical financial assistance.

The Lehigh Valley Arts Council Presents: Behind The Scenes

Allentown, PA – The second installment of the Arts Alive! 2014 series,“Behind the Scenes” features Curtis Dretsch, stage designer for Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre’s production of Monty Python’s Spamalot.

Dretsch is the Director of Design and Technical Theatre for Muhlenberg College, and has designed sets, costumes, and lighting for more than 100 theatre and dance productions on local and national stages. He is known for creating lavish colors, spectacular designs, and architectural magic that amazes audiences, and he continues to build precise models of each project. Guests will get a glimpse into his design process—from concept to scale model to the completed stage set.

Written by Monty Python’s comic genius Eric Idle and composer John Du Prez, the 2005 Broadway production of Monty Python’s Spamalot was “lovingly ripped off” from the classic 1975 film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The stage musical parodies the legend of King Arthur and his band of lunatic knights as they sing and dance their way through a ridiculous divine quest. The show, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical and was seen on Broadway by more than two million people, is providing Dretsch the opportunity to tackle its wacky story and outrageous landscape for the 34th Season of the Muhlenberg Summer Music Theatre.

“Behind the Scenes” is intended to spark everyone’s creative process by spending time with performers and designers who are willing to share personal insights and experiences.

“Behind the Scenes” will take place July 12, 2014 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Trexler Pavilion for Theatre & Dance, located on the Muhlenberg College campus at 2400 W. Chew Street, Allentown, Pa.

20 Face Charges In Drug Sweep In Tamaqua

TAMAQUA, PA – Arrest papers and pictures of suspects in hand, officers knocked on doors in the Tamaqua area Monday morning, taking more than a dozen people into custody on drug charges.

At least one defendant was arrested for drug possession, while most of the defendants are accused of actually selling drugs, according to Schuylkill County District Attorney Christine Holman, who along with Tamaqua police Chief Rick Weaver and members of the county drug task force orchestrated the effort.

In total, 17 warrants were served, though 20 are facing charges. The arrests came after months of police investigations involving undercover and controlled drug purchases of narcotics, some of which involved video-recorded purchases for the sale of methamphetamine, heroin and marijuana.

Holman, who sat through all of Monday’s arraignments, personally asked that each person be held on high bail, stating over and over again that her office and law enforcement are taking a tough stance on drugs in the county and considers those dealing to be a danger to the community.

Talk Of Wilkes-Barre Area Tax Hike Shifts To Needs For The Future

WILKES-BARRE, PA  — While the Wilkes-Barre Area School District budget committee continued to discuss a possible 2.9 percent tax increase at a Tuesday noon meeting — talk that prompted stinging rebukes from resident Sam Troy — the tone of the conversation seemed to shift from needing the tax hike to cover a 2014-15 shortfall to needing it to cover future costs.

Business manager Leonard Pryzwara noted the proposed budget sets aside 0.15 mills for debt service, and suggested an annual increase along those lines to cover future repair or construction costs. A mill is a $1 tax on every $1,000 of assessed property value. The current tax rate is 15.22 mills. A 2.9 percent increase — the maximum allowed at Wilkes-Barre Area this year by state law — would raise the rate to 15.921 mills.

Cross-State Cost On Pennsylvania Turnpike In 2015: $46.05

Tolls on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will increase 5 percent in 2015, effective Jan. 4.

The decision by the Turnpike Commission Tuesday to hike tolls for the seventh year in a row means the cash toll to drive from the Ohio border to the New Jersey border will be $46.05 for passenger cars, up from the current $43.85
