Customers Welcome Return Of Downtown’s Market Square Farmers Market

Downtown resident Janie Robinson and her friend Donna Farmer, of Westwood, stop by the Market Square Farmers Market almost every Thursday to see “the honey man” after their morning silver sneakers class at the PNC YMCA.

For years, the friends have looked forward to the weekly summer market showcasing local vendors. For Ms. Robinson, the market is walking distance from her home on Stanwix Street. “The honey man’s” wildflower honey, Ms. Farmer says, is one of the best treatments for the nasal allergies that plague her during the spring and summer.

“We come here all the time, and will drop by to see him,” Ms. Farmer said today. “(The honey) is so fresh and good, straight from the beehive.”

Produced by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, the farmers market runs every Thursday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. through Oct. 30. About 30 local vendors offer a variety of goods, selling everything from produce and pierogies to vegetarian dog treats.

Police: Man Arrested After Stealing From Same Store 3 Times In 5 Days

A 20-year-old county man was arrested after stealing from the same Manheim Township store three times in five days, police said.

Skyler J. Daugherty, who has addresses on East Main Street in Lititz and in the 700 block of Pearl Avenue in Manheim, also now faces additional charges from other police departments in the county.

On May 16, Daugherty took a watch and speakers valued at $242 from the Walmart at 2030 Fruitville Pike, Manheim Township police Sgt. Tom Rudzinski reported.

On Monday, he took $209 worth of gaming items from the same store.

Coroner: Shooting Death Of Scanton Cab Driver Ruled A Homicide

SCRANTON, PA — The shooting death of a McCarthy cab driver has been ruled a homicide, Lackawanna County Coroner Tim Rowland said.

Vincent Darbenzio, 47, of Scranton, died from multiple gunshot wounds to his head, Mr. Rowland said. Scranton police and the Lackawanna County District Attorney offices are conducting the homicide investigation.

Mr. Darbenzio was dead inside his cab early this morning, said Brian McCarthy, owner of McCarthy Flowered Cabs. Mr. Darbenzio, 47, was dispatched early this morning to Washburn Street to pick up an individual and drop him or her off at Valley View Terrace.

More People Moving Into Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Region Than Out

PLAINS TOWNSHIP, PA — More people are moving into the region than leaving.

Migration into Luzerne and Lackawanna counties is on the rise and much of the immigration is coming from New York, New Jersey and elsewhere in Pennsylvania, according to the 2014 Indicators Report from the Institute for Public Policy and Economic Development at Wilkes University.

The report, unveiled Thursday morning to business and civic leaders who filled the convention center at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs, analyzed 120 indicators in areas such as demographics, population and migration, jobs and the economy. It was the ninth year for the event, said Teri Ooms, executive director of the institute.

Ooms highlighted the 2010 Census, which shows a growing population for the first time since the 1950s. Some are from the low- to moderate-income demographic and some earn a middle- to upper-middle income, the report showed.

Gains And Losses In Philadelphia Region’s Population

A number of communities in the region’s Pennsylvania suburbs, notably in Chester and Montgomery Counties, grew substantially between April 2010 and July 2013, Census Bureau population estimates released Thursday show.

In Chester County, there were noteworthy upticks in municipalities such as Malvern, West Chester, East Brandywine, and West Goshen, and the same was true in Chester/Delaware County border towns such as Bethel and Chadds Ford. In central Montgomery County, Upper Hanover, Towamencin, and Salford were among the burgeoning towns.

Meanwhile, Philadelphia remained the fifth-largest U.S. city, with a population estimated at 1.553 million through July 2013, an increase of just over 27,000 from April 2010. It was the seventh year in a row of population growth, the census data showed.

(Population estimates for neighborhoods within the city limits will not be available until December.)

Ocean City Tops New Jersey’s Best Beaches

Ocean City has reclaimed its status as New Jersey’s most popular beach in an annual online voting contest.

The Cape May County resort took top honors in the New Jersey Top Ten Beaches contest. Results were announced Thursday.

The contest is sponsored by the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium and Stockton College as a way of making people feel more connected to and protective of the state’s 127-mile coastline.

Ocean City, which calls itself “America’s Greatest Family Resort,” won the contest in 2009 as well.

Truck Driver Who Damaged Rapps Dam Bridge Faces Charges

EAST PIKELAND TOWNSHIP, PA— Police say charges will be filed against the driver ofa truck that severely damaged the Rapps Dam Covered Bridge late last month.

Antoine Branham, who was driving the tractor-trailer with a load of flowers for a New Jersey nursery, is slated to be charged for a felony count of criminal mischief along with the lesser charge of causing or risking a catastrophe, according to the East Pikeland Police.
