York Restaurants Recover From Winter Weather, Parking Woes

Severe weather, parking problems and a prime rib shortage made for a not-so-sweet Valentine’s Day at Coomb’s Tavern, said owner Teresa Marquette.

Since the restaurant is on the outskirts of York City, all the snow has nowhere to go, she said. Its parking garages and street spaces are either overwhelmed by mounds of snow or buried cars, she said.

“It’s a mess right now,” Marquette said. “It’s a total mess.”

The weather — the worst she’s seen in 18 years of owning Coomb’s — has even drowned out the restaurant’s recognition, she said, as York City named it February’s Merchant of the Month.

Pottsville Mayor Describes City’s Challenge To Fix Streets

While giving his first State of the City address Thursday night, Pottsville Mayor James T. Muldowney deviated from his 11-page speech only once.

Before giving the crowd of more than 75 in council chambers an update on streets and public improvements, Muldowney, 56, said: “My wife told me I should ad lib a little bit. So, God bless you, Ron. And you too, Dan.”

He was referring to Councilman Ronald J. Moser, who heads up the city’s streets and public improvements department, and the challenge Moser and city officials, including Superintendent of Streets Daniel E. Kelly, will face as a result of the wicked winter.

“Dan Kelly and the men that work in this department have the skills and determination to help our residents brave the worst of weather,” Muldowney said.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Airport Gets Funds To Aid In Attracting Carriers

PITTSTON TWP. — For the second time in 11 years, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport is the recipient of a federal grant to entice airlines to offer new destinations or to increase the number of flights to current destinations.

The $575,000 federal Small Community Air Service Development grant will be used to encourage airlines to add flights to business and leisure destinations that are among the most requested by passengers.

Airport Director Barry J. Centini said that on the leisure side, he will look to add Myrtle Beach, S.C., Tampa Bay and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., as destinations. For business travelers, Pittsburgh and Washington are the targets.

Those destinations seem to be the ones many customers request or wind up taking connecting flights to get to when they embark from the local airport. He said the funds also could be used to entice airlines already operating out of Avoca to add additional flights to current destinations such as Atlanta.

Legion Working Toward Sherman Hills Guard Pact

WILKES-BARRE, PA — A key component of the Sherman Hills Apartments security plan is guards — armed and unarmed — watching the complex and screening outsiders.

The security plan includes:

• Better lighting and possibly more surveillance cameras, but also a guard shack manned around the clock and a mobile armed guard.

• An 8-foot fence is to go up around Sherman Hills and the high rise adjacent to the complex. A gate along North Sherman Street is to be used only by emergency vehicles.

Assaulted Officers Testify About Incident Outside Pottstown Club (Video)

LOWER POTTSGROVE TOWNSHIP, PA — Two men who allegedly assaulted two Pottstown Police officers who were attending to a shooting victim are headed to Montgomery County court.

Chadd Watson, 23, and Brooklyn Aiken, 22, both of Pottstown, are accused of assaulting two officers outside the Montgomery Elks Club on Walnut Street in Pottstown on Feb. 2 around 2:30 a.m.

The two accused men appeared in front District Judge Edward C. Kropp Sr. and a full courtroom Friday morning.

Officers from the borough police department lined the back wall of the courtroom and took up several rows of seats while family and friends of Watson and Aiken filed in. There were so many supporters for both sides that several people were asked to leave by the judge and told to wait in the lobby.
