Great Year For Gourds: Weather Conditions Favorable For Farmers

JOHNSTOWN, PA — The search for The Great Pumpkin by cartoon icon Charlie Brown may have come to a rapid conclusion had he had access to this year’s pumpkin field at the Tim Gresh farm near Colver.
The norm this year at Gresh’s farm are pumpkins weighing 50 pounds or more, pumpkins that are being turned into some of the biggest, scariest Jack-o-Lanterns gracing porches and lawns.
With pumpkins 90 percent water, moisture in the 2013 growing season of Cambria and Somerset counties has been abundant enough to meet that high standard, but not too much to foster growth problems, according to growers.
The result is plenty of well-shaped, good-colored, heavy pumpkins, be they for pies or for fun.
Aiello’s Criminal Past An Issue?

WILKES-BARRE, PA — Vito J. Aiello had a criminal past. He also, allegedly, had access to a gun.
The city man stands accused of shooting his wife to death Sept. 26, before turning the gun on himself.
And that raises questions about whether Aiello’s history of harassment, terroristic threats, stalking, at least one previous protection-from-abuse order and a request for an involuntary mental-health commitment would — or should — have prevented him from purchasing or possessing firearms.
In Pennsylvania, there are three main types of cases in which gun ownership may be affected, said Susan Sorenson, a professor with the Penn School of Social Policy and Practice with the University of Pennsylvania: certain protection-from-abuse (restraining order) cases, misdemeanor domestic violence convictions or domestic violence crime scenes in which a weapon may be implicated.

Obama Open To Name Change For Washington Redskins

WASHINGTON (AP) – President Barack Obama says that if he owned the Washington Redskins, he would “think about changing” the team name, wading into the controversy over a football nickname that many people deem offensive to Native Americans.
Obama, in an interview with The Associated Press, said team names like the Redskins offend “a sizable group of people.” He said that while fans get attached to the nicknames, nostalgia may not be a good enough reason to keep them in place.
“I don’t know whether our attachment to a particular name should override the real legitimate concerns that people have about these things,” he said in the interview, which was conducted Friday.
An avid sports fan, Obama said he doesn’t think Washington football fans are purposely trying to offend American Indians. “I don’t want to detract from the wonderful Redskins fans that are here. They love their team and rightly so,” he said.

Driver Charged In Fatality, But Road Shares Blame

In a press conference aimed at Route 222 drivers but mostly at PennDOT, Berks County District Attorney John T. Adams announced Friday that police have filed homicide charges against the New Jersey trucker who caused the most horrific of several fatal accidents on that congested highway.
The Oct. 22, 2012, crash in Maidencreek Township killed Lauren Boyer, 45, of Richmond Township when a tractor-trailer squashed her stopped car into the stopped truck ahead of her.
It also injured three people, one of them still undergoing treatment and surgeries.
Earlier Friday, Northern Berks Regional Police filed charges of homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter and related offenses against the truck driver, Emilio Perez-Pazmino, 62, of Jersey City.
