Local Singer Songwriter To Perform At ArtFusion 19464

Pottstown, PA – Local singer-songwriter Mike Holliday will perform two original one act plays in ArtFusion’s main gallery on Saturday, October 19. The performance will begin at 8pm. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased at ArtFusion’s 254 E. High St. location. Tickets are cash only. The event is a fundraiser for the non-profit community art center.

The first piece Mike will perform is titled Marching Back to Woodstock and is a journey of hope in songs and stories. This show is filled with songs and personal insights about peace, the ecology, and social awareness. It is meant to reawaken the spirit of the march and ask people to take that first step.

The second piece is Coffeehouse Songs & Diner Stories, a mixed menu of songs and stories. This show is filled some of Mike’s more personal songs and stories. Some will touch your funny bone. Some will touch your heart.

Mike Holliday is a singer-songwriter from Pottstown PA and has been singing for a long time. Only recently has he pursued it full time. Mike has performed at Listen Live Music in Macungi, PA, Godfrey Daniels in Bethlehem, PA, Steel City Coffeehouse in Phoenixville, PA, and Musikfest in Bethlehem, PA, among others.

ArtFusion 19464 is a 501(c)3 non-profit community art center located at 254 E. High St. in downtown Pottstown. The school offers day, evening and weekend classes to all ages. The goal of these classes is to help students develop their creative skills through self-expression and independence. ArtFusion’s gallery hosts rotating shows featuring local artists. The gallery also sells handcrafted, one-of-a-kind gift items. The gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 10am-5pm and Saturday 10am-3pm. The gallery is closed Sunday and Monday.

Man Stabbed Outside Whim Nightclub In Station Square Parking Lot

One man was critically wounded when another stabbed him outside Whim Nightclub in Station Square this morning, Pittsburgh police said.

Officers arrested Brion R. Harrison, 20, no address listed, on charges of attempted homicide, aggravated assault and possessing an instrument of crime.

Mr. Harrison told police he went to Whim and, as the bar closed, approached several people, including the 20-year-old Homestead man he is now accused of stabbing.

Proposal Will Make Downtown Pittsburgh Core Totally Bus-Free

Port Authority has begun working on a plan to remove buses and bus stops from the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh.

The plan, backed by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and the city’s presumptive mayor-to-be, Bill Peduto, would relocate routes and stops toward the edges of the Golden Triangle, creating what Mr. Fitzgerald called “a zone in the core of Downtown that is bus-free.”

Details have not been worked out and Mr. Fitzgerald said the changes aren’t likely until sometime next year. “We don’t want to rush into it and not do it right,” he said.

Mr. Peduto said he envisions a circular route pattern using wider streets toward the edges of Downtown rather than having buses coming from four different directions and turning around in the middle of town.

Harrisburg Mayoral Hopefuls Fielding Questions For First General Election Debate

HARRISBURG, PA – Three mayoral candidates are fielding questions during the general election’s first debate.

The event started at 6 p.m. at co-sponsor Harrisburg Area Community College’s student center, 1 HACC Drive.

Democrat Eric Papenfuse, Republican nominee Dan Miller and write-in hopeful Lewis Butts will participate.

Whoever wins the election will lead Harrisburg as the city emerges from financial recovery.

Stink Bugs Invading Lancaster County Again

“This is like being in an Alfred Hitchcock movie, only it’s stink bugs instead of birds. When you step outside they jump on you. This is like a plague or something!”

That’s an exasperated Drema Brubaker, when the Asian invaders began swarming her family’s home in the woods near Mount Nebo in the southern end earlier this week.

“I’ve lived here since 1976 but I was so mad I was throwing a fit, saying I didn’t want to live here anymore,” she said. “I’m like a wild woman swatting them.”

Unfortunately, the Brubaker family’s new reality may play out in many other Lancaster County homes over the next several weeks.

Scranton, Wilkes-Barre Area Roads Among Bottom Third In Mid-Sized Cities Nationally

A national research group ranked the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area’s roads among the bottom third of the nation’s mid-sized cities.

More specifically, TRIP ranked both cities and the surrounding suburban areas 17th worst among 62 urban regions with populations between 250,000 and 500,000.

Thirty-two percent of the region’s roads are “in poor condition and provide a rough ride,” according to the report that TRIP released Thursday.

The average motorist in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area pays $539 annually in vehicle maintenance costs related to the substandard roads, which TRIP ranked 18th nationally.

Allentown Arena Starts To Get Its Roof Overhead

A milestone of sorts for Allentown’s new arena has begun.

Three massive cranes this morning began lifting the seven 236-foot-long roof supports, called trusses, into place above the 8,500-seat PPL Center. Workers hoisted 85 feet in the air in high-reach cherry-pickers will use pneumatic wrenches to fasten the trusses into place with massive bolts.

Each truss, a curved structural support laced with a series of steel triangles, weighs between 125,000 and 212,000 pounds.

The first truss is expected to take 14 to 16 hours to install. The trusses were constructed on the arena floor last week.

U.S. Catholics Back Pope Francis On Changing Church’s Focus

CHICAGO, IL — Pope Francis‘ comments that the Catholic Church should not focus so much on homosexuality, abortion and contraception have met with strong approval from U.S. Catholics, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released on Friday.

Sixty-eight percent of American Catholics agree with comments the Pope made to that effect in an interview published last month in the Jesuit magazine Civilta Cattolica, while 23 percent disagreed, according to the poll. There was little difference in opinion between observant and less-observant Catholics, women and men, and among age groups, the poll found.

American Catholics also like their new pope, with 89 percent having a “favorable” or “very favorable” opinion, and only 4 percent voicing an unfavorable opinion, the poll found.

Corbett Compares Same-Sex Marriage To Incest

HARRISBURG, PA – Pennsylvania Gov. Corbett on Friday compared same-sex marriage to the marriage of brothers and sisters.

The Republican governor, whose approval ratings have been low and who is up for reelection next year, made the comments during an interview with WHP-TV in Harrisburg, after being asked about a controversial statement his lawyers had made over the summer on gay marriage.

During the interview, Corbett called “inappropriate” his attorneys’ statement in an August court filing. In the filing, the attorneys wrote that gay marriage is against Pennsylvania law, just as marriage is between children.

The governor then told the news station that he thought “a much better analogy would have been brother and sister, don’t you?”

Britney Spears said she’s being pushed into making videos that are too sexy, according to TMZ.

Spears talked about her video for the new single “Work (expletive)” during a Thursday morning interview on the TJ Show on AM 103.3.

“A lot of sex goes into what I do,” she said. “But sometimes I would like to bring it back to the old days, when there was like one outfit through the whole video, and you’re dancing the whole video, and there’s like not that much sex stuff going on.”

When wasn’t there “that much sex stuff going on” in a Britney Spears video? Which old days were those, exactly?

Reading Officials Form Plan To Find Foreclosed-Property Owners

A two-alarm fire in September 2011 gutted a vacant row home at 1422 Muhlenberg St., damaged two neighboring properties, and started the city on yet another frustrating journey to find an owner and order that a building be properly boarded up.

The Muhlenberg Street problem was just one skirmish in the city’s ongoing battle to find elusive property owners for such things as fire cleanup, unpaid taxes, quality-of-life tickets or blight.

But the battle may soon be over.

The city has a plan to get banks to register their foreclosures and may hire an outside firm to help monitor and enforce the rules.

Car Slams Into Sinking Spring Restaurant; Several Hurt

A Reading woman drove her car through the side of a Five Guys Burgers and Fries in Sinking Spring on Thursday night, showering patrons with glass and forcing them to scramble to safety.

At least one person was taken to a hospital.

The driver, Marcia Conver, 76, was with her granddaughter and two great granddaughters about 6:50 p.m. when the car went through the side of the restaurant in the 3500 block of Penn Avenue.

“We were just parking, and I hit the gas instead of the brake, and it was that fast that I couldn’t help it. I just feel so bad,” she said.
