WHEELING, WV — An argument that turned physical and ended with the death of a Wheeling Jesuit University student this weekend appears to have begun as a random encounter, Wheeling police said this afternoon.

Two men were arrested this morning in Ohio County outside Triadelphia, W.Va., and charged in the killing of Kevin M. Figaniak, 21, of Perkasie, Pa., which is between Allentown and Philadelphia.

Craig Tyler Peacock, 22, of Clewiston, Fla., and Jarrett Mathis Chandler, 24, of Winnfield, La., were arraigned this morning and are being held at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville, W.Va., on $1 million cash bond, Wheeling police said.

Each man told police he and his friends followed two unknown men down Edgington Lane, through the intersection and onto Locust Avenue, according to a Wheeling police criminal complaint.

‘American Idol’ Taps Lopez, Connick As Judges

LOS ANGELES — “American Idol” is betting that a judges’ remix with Jennifer Lopez, Harry Connick Jr. and Keith Urban will fare better with viewers than bickering divas Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj did last season.

The rumored addition of Lopez and Connick as judges for season 13 was announced Tuesday by Fox. They’ll join Urban to make up the talent show’s first panel consisting solely of singers — a la NBC’s successful 2011 upstart “The Voice.”

Pop star and actress Lopez will be back on “American Idol” after a two-season run as judge in 2011 and 2012 that was a boon for the show and her career. Connick, a respected jazz singer and musician, proved adept as a mentor in several “Idol” appearances.

Urban’s return to the contest was announced last month by Fox Chairman Kevin Reilly, who said the singer didn’t get a chance to show his personality in his first turn as a judge. Urban appeared overwhelmed last season by the Carey-Minaj crossfire that drew complaints from some viewers.

Reading police are looking for a man they say stabbed and repeatedly slashed his estranged girlfriend in her home while her two young children were there.

Bladimir Delvalle, 32, whose last known address is the 1000 block of Locust Street, was charged with attempted murder and related charges in the assault of the 33-year-old woman Monday night in the 1300 block of Perkiomen Avenue.

Senior District Judge Gloria W. Stitzel signed an arrest warrant for Velvalle early Tuesday in Reading Central Court, and he remained at large Tuesday afternoon.

The city had budgeted savings of nearly $900,000 this year by purging its health insurance rolls of ineligible employees, dependents and police retirees.

It also budgeted a contingency fund of $980,000, if the purges didn’t go as planned.

They haven’t.

Managing Director Carole B. Snyder said the city has seen little savings so far because the police retiree purge got bogged down in arbitration and in complex evaluations that may not be complete by year’s end.
