Shortly after 3 a.m. today, Allegheny County 911 dispatchers received two calls about a shooting at a house in Shaler.

The first came from Charlene Edwards, 51, who was inside the brick ranch home when police said her husband, James Edwards, 52, walked room to room and started shooting.

The second came from a person who had been playing an online game with the couple’s 21-year-old son, James Edwards Jr., at the time and “heard the shots being fired and screams over the open video game connection,” according to a press release from Allegheny County homicide Lt. Andrew Schurman.

Within minutes, Shaler police were on the scene. Mr. Edwards and the couple’s daughter, Laurin Edwards, 19, died at the scene.  Ms. Edwards and Jimmy Edwards were taken to Allegheny General Hospital, where they remained in critical condition in the trauma unit this afternoon.

Dereck Holt has promise and potential, it was said Thursday in Lancaster County Court.

But Holt also has “a darker side,” which came out Dec. 14 when he beat and robbed three elderly sisters, tied them up and left them for dead.

“I don’t think you’re a bad person,” President Judge Joseph Madenspacher told the 22-year-old Holt.  “But I do think you are a real danger to the community.  Not because you want to be.”

Madenspacher ordered Holt to spend 12 to 40 years in state prison, where he will get intensive psychiatric treatment, for the attack inside the sisters’ Ephrata home.

Three Philadelphia residents face drug charges after a state trooper stopped their speeding vehicle near Bear Creek and found heroin, marijuana and a loaded revolver, according to court records.

Anton Larry Bennett, 27, Malachi Bennett, 25, and Jamal Clark, 40, are accused of possessing $8,500 worth of heroin in addition to 22 bags of marijuana and the gun, troopers said.

According to a police affidavit, Trooper Mark Conrad was running a radar gun along Interstate 476 at the Bear Creek exit when he clocked a Chevrolet SUV speeding through a 45 mph work zone at 57 mph.

The SUV then quickly exited the interstate. The officer followed, conducting a traffic stop.

MOOSIC, PA – Maybe Derek Jeter liked his last excursion through Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so much, he couldn’t help taking another trip there.

More likely, that destination is becoming the place to be for rehabbing New York Yankee stars.

Whatever the reason, Jeter will make his second rehab appearance of the season with the Triple-A RailRiders starting with tonight’s 7:05 game with Pawtucket and is expected to hang around with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre possibly through Saturday.

And that’s encouraging news to a Scranton/Wilkes-Barre team that missed out on drawing some prime Yankees players who were working their way back to the big leagues at other levels of the organization in the past.
