Allegations Surface Of Explicit Exchanges By Weiner After His Resignation

Anthony D. Weiner, a leading candidate for mayor, on Tuesday confronted new allegations that he had engaged in raunchy online conversations with a woman after he had resigned from Congress over similar behavior.

Mr. Weiner seemed to acknowledge the behavior, saying, “Some things that have been posted today are true.”  He did not deny that the conversations took place after he said he would seek treatment to end his pattern of sending sexually explicit words and images to women who were fans of his politics.

“These things that I did were wrong and hurtful to my wife and caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from Congress,” he said in a statement issued Tuesday.  He added, “This behavior is behind me.”

The allegations were posted on a Web site called The Dirty, which describes itself as a gossip and satire site, and which warns that its “postings may contain erroneous or inaccurate information.”

Study: Pittsburgh’s Social Mobility Among Best In U.S.

The rags-to-riches, Great Gatsby-esque storyline may be more reality than fiction in the Pittsburgh area, a national study suggests.

Pittsburgh is in the top tier of cities for social mobility, according to a report released this week.  The survey, which incorporated earnings filings from millions of Americans to assess people’s likelihood of moving between income classes, found that Pittsburghers born to parents who make just $30,000 per year typically move further up the income ladder than similar people in any of America’s 50 largest commuter areas except Salt Lake City.

And on a more regional level, Pittsburgh stands out among communities in the Rust Belt for its propensity toward social mobility.

“Pittsburgh does look more like an outlier from the perspective of the general economic situation, from the types of economic shocks that have been hitting that region in the past 20 years,” said Nathaniel Hendren, a Harvard economist and one of the report’s four authors, who hail from Harvard and the University of California, Berkeley, and are affiliated with the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Cumberland County Coroner Says Man Shot Himself In Hampden Township Yard

A 53-year-old Enola man who died Sunday in the yard of a Hampden Township home shot himself in the chest, Cumberland County Coroner Charles Hall said.

The man’s death was ruled a suicide, Hall said.  An autopsy performed Monday found the cause of death to be a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Former CBS 21 Reporter Kirk Wilson Confirms News Director’s Connection To Prostitution Sting

Kirk Wilson, former CBS 21 reporter, confirmed Saturday that the man who fired him in May from the news station and a man police arrested for allegedly soliciting prostitution are one and the same.

“That’s the face that fired me,” Wilson said in reference to a mug shot of David Baer issued by Swatara Township police.  Baer is the station’s news director, taking the job just about two months ago.

Wilson, the former Carlisle mayor, said he was also able to confirm that connection by talking to employees at the station.  He said they didn’t know any more about the case than what was issued in a Swatara Township police news release.

Official: 10 Hurt As Landing Gear Collapses At LaGuardia Airport

NEW YORK — The front landing gear of a flight arriving at New York’s LaGuardia Airport collapsed Monday right after the plane touched down on the runway, officials said, sending the aircraft skidding before it came to a halt.

Ten passengers were treated at the scene, with six being taken to a hospital with minor injuries, said Thomas Bosco, Acting Director of Aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the area airports.  The six crew members were taken to another hospital for observation.

Dallas-based Southwest said there were 150 people on Flight 345 coming from Nashville, Tenn., while the Port Authority said the total was 149.

Bosco said the nose gear of the plane collapsed when it landed at 5:40 p.m., and “the aircraft skidded down the runway on its nose and then veered off and came to rest in the grass area.”

SEPTA Ridership At All-Time High

SEPTA commuter trains had more passengers than ever in the year that ended June 30, carrying just over 36 million riders, SEPTA officials said Monday.

The trend was mirrored nationwide, as public transit in general and trains in particular have been gaining riders in recent years.

High gas prices, congested highways, relatively low fares, and a growing preference among young people for transit have all contributed to the rising number of passengers, transportation officials said Monday.

SEPTA Regional Rail trains carried 36.0 million riders, up from 35.3 million in fiscal 2012 and above the previous record of 35.5 million in 2008.  As recently as 1993, SEPTA carried just 19.2 million riders.

In Montgomery County, a contested Democratic primary in Pottstown’s Seventh Ward has translated into a general election battle.

Although incumbent Borough Councilman Joseph Kirkland easily won the Democratic line in the November ballot, his opponent, Cindy Conard picked up 50 wrote-in votes on the Republican line, for which no candidates were running.

As a result, the two will face-off again on the November ballot, with Kirkland on the Democratic line and Conard on the Republican line.

Albert Boscov: Reading School Board Should Honor 2006 Tax Deal

Editor’s note:  We ask the members of the school board not the be penny-wise and pound-foolish. Do the right thing for Reading’s revitalization.  Honor the deal!

Albert Boscov wants the Reading School District to hold up its part of the deal.

Back in 2006, Reading School Board members – along with city and county officials – agreed to a plan to reduce property taxes for the then-proposed GoggleWorks Apartments.  But now that the complex at Second and Washington streets is open, a problem has popped up.

It turns out, Our City Reading, which spearheaded the project, never officially finalized the tax deals.

Boscov has met with school district, city and county officials in hopes of getting current officials to sign off on the tax breaks their predecessors agreed to.  He attended Monday night’s Reading School Board meeting to reiterate his plea.

Fired West Reading Officer Cleared Of Harassment

Former West Reading Police Officer Ronald E. Ladd has been cleared of a harassment charge stemming from the altercation last August that resulted in his firing.

The ruling, issued Friday by Berks County Judge Timothy J. Rowley, overturned Ladd’s November conviction, which carried a $300 fine and courts costs.

“I’m thankful,” Ladd said Monday of his successful appeal. “Very thankful for the judge to be able to look at this unbiased, and deep in my heart I knew that eventually justice would be served.  And I’m just very thankful.”

Despite the good news in court, Ladd remains without a job a week after West Reading’s Civil Service Commission upheld his November firing from the borough force.
