Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate fell slightly to 7.5 percent in May, the state announced this afternoon.
The state’s economy added 24,000 new jobs compared to April — the highest one-month gain since 1983. The number of people filing for unemployment claims also fell in May by 9,000 to 488,000.

WILKES-BARRE — On top of criminal charges and an upcoming deposition in a federal court case, add unpaid taxes to the list of problems facing Leo A. Glodzik III.
The state Thursday filed a $519,204 lien against Glodzik, saying he has not paid taxes on his personal income since 2006.
He owes $371,603 in taxes plus $147,565 in penalties and interest and the $36 filing fee paid by the state, according to the lien. The next highest amount owed in the county was $336,066 by Super Luxury Tours Inc. of Wilkes-Barre, according to the state.
Glodzik declined comment Friday when reached by phone.

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — The Food Network said Friday it’s dumping Paula Deen, barely an hour after the celebrity cook posted the first of two videotaped apologies online begging forgiveness from fans and critics troubled by her admission to having used racial slurs in the past.
The 66-year-old Savannah kitchen celebrity has been swamped in controversy since court documents filed this week revealed Deen told an attorney questioning her under oath last month that she has used the N-word. “Yes, of course,” Deen said, though she added, “It’s been a very long time.”
The Food Network, which made Deen a star with “Paula’s Home Cooking” in 2002 and later “Paula’s Home Cooking” in 2008, weighed in with a terse statement Friday afternoon.
“Food Network will not renew Paula Deen’s contract when it expires at the end of this month,” the statement said. Network representatives declined further comment. A representative for Deen did not immediately return phone and email messages seeking comment on the decision.

CONSHOHOCKEN — A revised Conshohocken Residential Rental License Permit ordinance was unanimously adopted by Borough Council Wednesday night despite the objections from a Realtor association representative, a Conshohocken landlord and a Realtor.
The ordinance established permit fees and inspection fees for each apartment, required landlords to have a resident agent within 12 miles of the leased building and provided penalties for landlords if tenants violate a detailed list of conduct.
“Council has been considering the revised rental ordinance for more than a year. It creates different classes of licenses and provides for a biannual inspection,” said Solicitor Michael Savona. “We have a requirement that landlords have a designated rental agent. Conshohocken will have a very comprehensive and cutting-edge rental license ordinance.”
Borough Manager Fran Marabella said there were more than 2,000 rental apartments in the borough.
HONG KONG — The request from the United States that Hong Kong detain Edward J. Snowden, who has been accused of stealing government secrets, before it seeks his return to America is likely to set off a tangled and protracted fight, with Mr. Snowden and his legal advisers having multiple tools to delay or thwart his being surrendered to American officials.
Mr. Snowden’s exact location was unclear Saturday, though he was believed to be hiding in a safe house in Hong Kong after leaving a hotel room two weeks ago upon revealing that he was the one who had leaked details of American surveillance efforts to the media. Hong Kong police officials would not comment Saturday about Mr. Snowden’s whereabouts.
Stephen Vickers, who oversaw police criminal intelligence in Hong Kong before Britain returned the territory to China in 1997, said Saturday that the Hong Kong police had certainly figured out where Mr. Snowden was hiding and should be able to detain him once Hong Kong government lawyers determined that the charges Mr. Snowden faced in the United States were also legal offenses in Hong Kong.
“I have no doubt whenever the government decides to take action, they will pick him up fast,” said Mr. Vickers, who now runs a risk consulting firm.

POTTSTOWN — The neatly manicured grass courts and multicolored neon nets in Memorial Park got more use Friday during the Dream in Gold Juniors Tournament.
Nearly 100 doubles teams signed up to play in the first juniors tournament at the Rumble, according to Rick Hanson, the director of project management for the Pottstown Rumble.
Hanson said the largest age group was the 18-and-under girls.
Supporters camped out to watch their children play under umbrellas, tents and canopies that sprayed water periodically. There were folding chairs, blankets and battery powered fans to keep the players and their family members cool between matches.

PennDOT says it could make Route 222 four lanes from Reading to Allentown and catch up on road and bridge repairs all over Berks County if it can get its hands on more money.
The agency released its long-awaited Decade of Investment list Friday, detailing on an interactive website what extra projects it could get done if the state Legislature passes one of the transportation funding boosts that have been proposed.
The site allows people to compare what roadwork could be done if funds stay the same with what could be done with the $1.8 billion per year increase Gov. Tom Corbett proposed in February or the $2.5 billion per year increase the state Senate passed this month.
“There’s not much that’s going to happen if we’re faced with the current funding,” PennDOT spokesman Ronald J. Young Jr. said, adding, “We’d just be treading water, so to speak.”

An extremely rare donation graced the loading dock this week of a nonprofit shop dedicated to providing clothes to Reading’s homeless and impoverished.
An entire van filled with men’s clothing backed up to the rear door of the City Thrift Shop, 314 Penn St., and was unloaded by Jim Long of Rockland Township and shop volunteer Jan Buskirk of Wyomissing.
Donations of men’s clothing are the hardest to come by, said Christine Leonhardt, who began managing the shop about eight years ago.
A few bags at once is rare, let alone an entire cargo van.
