Number Of Those Killed In Pennsylvania Crashes Rose In 2012

Statewide, the number of people killed in crashes has increased from 2011 but is the third lowest on record, the state Department of Transportation said Monday.

A press release issued by the department said that 1,310 people died in crashes in the state, an increase of 24 people from 2011.

The lowest recorded number of fatalities was 1,256 in 2009, PennDOT said.

Locally, the number of people killed on state roads has also increased.

Hazleton Police Chief Warns Business Owners To Get Their Licenses

Police Chief Frank DeAndrea is giving a warning out to businesses operating in Hazleton to have their licenses and make sure that they are in conformity to the city’s codes.

The Hazleton Police Department is going to work in unison with the city’s fire, health, code enforcement, and highway departments in a new city-wide initiative called “Operation Clean Street.”

Set to begin in a week or two, the initiative will pull all of the departments’ resources in an effort to beautify the city’s streets and crack down on delinquent businesses.

According to DeAndrea, the operation will begin at the intersection of Diamond Avenue and Wyoming Street in which the fire department will bring a truck in to hose down and wash all debris from the streets and sidewalks.

A Philly Accent? Fuhgeddaboudit

Like most Philadelphia natives, I know the sound of a Philadelphia accent:

“So I tollum straight up, ‘Yo, Paulie, your sister’s wit me.  And we’re gawna ride widges down-ashore or this car don’t make it past Pashunk Avenue!’ ”

And like most Philadelphia natives, I don’t hear any accent in my voice when ordering kawfee at the Melrose or wooder ice at Rita’s.  Yanohwaddamean?

Seriously, me?  An accent?  Fuhgeddaboudit.

Nevertheless, I was disturbed by the recent headline “The Strange Decline of the Philly Accent” in the Atlantic magazine‘s online site, www.theatlanticcities.com.

You get paid. You see your land temporarily torn up.  You have the right to object.

Ultimately, though, you may have no choice.

“To me, it just doesn’t seem right that they can come in and tell you where they are going,” said Carr, who co-owns a 500-acre dairy farm in Bradford County.  “But I also know they have got to get the gas to market, and it is all a part of that.”
