Farmer’s Insurance Group has ranked State College, Pennsylvania as the second most secure small town in America, under 150,000 people. Farmer’s has done this study for seven years and State College has ranked in the top 20, six times.
Lewiston, ID – Clarkston, WA area was first, State College, PA was second and Ithaca, NY was 3rd.
Madison, WI took top honors for large metropolitan area (over 500,000) and Olympia, WA took the mid-sized city category.
The Pennsylvania jobless rate for November dropped to 8.6% while the nationally the unemployment rate rose to 9.8%. November marked the fourth straight month unemployment in Pennsylvania has decreased.

The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission voted today to split up the (814) area code. This area code, which covers from Erie County to the Maryland border, is running out of phone numbers.
The PUC considered three proposals on how to divide up this massive swath of Pennsylvania. Of the four original Pennsylvania area codes established in 1947, (814) was the last area code to remain unchanged.
Below is as link to the PA PUC website showing the county split. The new area code number has yet to be determined.

A sign of rough economic times is people breaking the law to get money. Usually, things like shoplifting, armed robbery and burglary are the most common. However, some clever criminals in Fayette County are stealing telephone line to strip the copper wire out and sell it.
We had a copper thief here in Pottstown. They were stealing copper rain gutters off churches, of all things, and selling it. They were fortunately apprehended.
In Fayette County, 35 thefts of telephone line have occurred since April. Since October, 19 of these thefts have occurred. Guess somebody needs some Christmas cash?
Verizon is offering up to $50,000 in rewards for information leading to an arrest. The downside is, in addition to Verizon being out money, Verizon customers are losing their phone service.
Fayette County is mostly rural and located south of Pittsburgh. The county shares its southern border with West Virginia. The county seat and largest city is Uniontown.
