Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell at the Broad ...

Our illustrious and soon-to-be ex-governor, Ed Rendell, has announced that only 100 Commonwealth employees will be laid-off as a result of the “budget” passed by the state legislature which counted on money before it was allocated.  Always a bright move!

Fortunately, so many people retired that it cut the number of employees needing furloughed from 1,000 to 100.

Rendell is proposing more spending cuts and taxes to make up for the budget shortfall he and the legislature created by including federal stimulus money in the budget before it was approved on Capitol Hill.

Looking forward to January 1st!  We won’t miss ya Ed.

Impatient Bethlehem Man Strikes Flagman – Attempts To Flees Scene

So we make a bad decision and then compound it!  Some people seriously need a slap.

An impatient Bethlehem man asked a flagman to move some orange cones in a construction zone so he could leave.  The flagman asked the driver to be patient.  The driver, evidently in a huge hurry, decides he has “had enough” and proceeds to try to drive through the construction site, striking the 62 year-old flagman.  Mr. Grumpy Pants then tries to flee the scene only to have two witnesses jump in front of his van to stop him.  I would have thought twice about that since he just hit someone but more power to the Good Samaritans.

The 66 year-old driver should have his license revoked IMHO for such an asinine and possibly deadly stunt.  Nobody needs to be in that big of a hurry that they hit someone “just doing their job”, then try to drive away.

Two big old Roy’s Rants thumbs down for the impatient driver who is old enough to know better!  Shame on you sir!

The flagman was taken to St. Luke’s Hospital in Fountain HIll and the upstanding driver was charged with leaving the scene of an accident involving an injury and had no comment when contacted by the local media.

Lehigh County Trims “Fat” From 2011 Budget

Seal of Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

It is never too early to start thinking about next year’s budget.  Lehigh County Executive Don Cunningham made an announcement yesterday that 50 positions will be eliminated from the county payroll in 2011.  The good news is 41 of these positions are currently vacant which leaves 9 people to be furloughed next year.  A tax increase is still possible at this time, however they working on keeping that from becoming a reality.

Lehigh County’s current employment levels are below 1990.  If you are keeping track of demographics, the county population has grown since then but they are doing more with less.  With the reductions that are planned for 2011, the total number of county employees with be 2.122 or 3.5% less than 1990.  The population of Lehigh County in 1990 was 291,000.  The current 2009 estimate put the population at 343,000.  A sizeable increase with less staff.

They are working smarter, with less staff, up in the Lehigh Valley.
