North Coventry Seeks Court Approval To Build On Preserved Land

NORTH COVENTRY — Township supervisors have petitioned Chester County Court for permission to build a new police and public works building on land originally deeded as open space.

A hearing has been scheduled on Oct. 22 at 9:30 a.m. at the Chester County Justice Center to determine whether the township can use 12 acres of a 22-acre tract located along Route 100, just south of Town Square Plaza for a municipal services building.

Township officials believe the land is well-suited for both the police department and the road crew because of its proximity to Route 100, and because it is situated near the township’s population center.  What’s more, since it is already in the township’s possession, using that land saves taxpayers the cost of purchasing property for a much needed municipal building.

However, at least one township resident has come out staunchly against constructing a municipal facility on land set aside as open space.

NORTH COVENTRY — A 19-year-old suspected of stealing from the Kohl’s in the Coventry Mall eluded police for just about 20 minutes before his capture in woods near the Route 100 overpass over River Road Thursday afternoon.

After 2:30 p.m., police were called to track down the young man who allegedly took some items from the store and ran on foot.

Originally, the suspect was described as having dark-colored pants and a white shirt, but as the pursuit evolved, witnesses said he took the shirt on and off.

The suspect, who police have not yet named, was eventually captured by several police officers from North Coventry, West Pottsgrove and Pottstown in the woods down the embankment from Route 100 on the 300 block of River Road.

Upgrades Reduced Route 100 Crashes, Study Finds

After a $1.5 million investment for safety-related improvements, crashes along Route 100 in northern Chester County were reduced by 30 percent between 2007 and 2011, an analysis by the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission found.

Improvements along the 8-mile stretch of road from the Pottstown area to Font Road in Upper Uwchlan included surface treatment, tree management to help the roads dry faster, additional signage and speed enforcement.

The commission examined the road after 10 fatal crashes between 2003 and 2006 and recommended several short-term safety improvements.  Since the improvements have been implemented, the number of fatal crashes dropped to three from 2007 to 2011, and none were reported in 2012, according to Regina Moore, a transportation engineer with the commission.

“A lot of the credit goes to (the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation), since they were the implementors of the safety improvements, which helped to reduce crashes along the corridor,” said Moore. “We couldn’t have reached this point if it weren’t for the stakeholders (state legislators and municipalities) caring to see that something got done to improve safety on (Route) 100 and being supportive of working with us in helping to develop recommendations.”

A residential development proposed for Washington Township has hit a snag because of recent changes to the water and sewer plans.

Developer Richard Mingey wants to build a 772-unit community on 225 acres just outside of Bally on the southeast side of the Route 100 and Kutztown Road intersection, extending to the west side of Schwenkfelder Road.

The problem arose at a planned residential development hearing before the township supervisors Tuesday. Attorney Amy Good objected that the plans before the board do not reflect the sewer and water service change: from municipal to on-site.

A Review of Pottstown’s New Asia Steakhouse

I had lunch at the new Asia Steakhouse today, in the West End Shopping Center, Pottstown.  It was formerly Gourmet Buffet.  Walking in the door was shocking (in a good way) as the new décor is amazing.  It truly is a major remodel.  Gleaming hardwood floors, new booths, tables and chairs, dishes, flatware etc…  Everything smelled brand new and was impeccably clean.

The lunch menu has a nice variety to choose from.  We both opted for the combination meals.  The combo meals come with soup or salad and dessert.  The entrée comes with either white or egg fried rice.  The prices are very reasonable!  Our bill for two lunches and two iced teas was $17.97

We both started with Wonton soup which was nicely prepared and very flavorful.

I ordered Shredded Beef in Peking Sauce, which is spicy.  It included delicious tender beef and tons of vegetables.  My friend ordered General Tso’s Chicken which also looked appetizing and included broccoli.  The presentations were excellent.  The new plates, which are rectangular and white, enhance the artfully displayed and colorful food.  The egg fried rice was also good.

Portion sizes are just right for lunch.  Not too big, not too small.  I am full but not stuffed.

For dessert we were treated to a small square of chocolate cake with chocolate sauce decorating the plate.  A nice sweet treat to round off the meal.

Our server was very friendly as was the host who greeted us at the door.

My friend used the ladies’ room and she reported it is beautiful and clean!

You are dining in elegant surroundings but not paying a premium price for great food.

Welcome to Pottstown Asia Steakhouse.  Two Roy’s Rants thumbs up!

The High Street bridge is now closed over the Manatawny Creek in downtown Pottstown.  The detour is College Drive to South Hanover Street.  You could also use King Street.  The High Street bridge will remain closed for one year while it is replaced.

The Route 100 bridge over the Schuylkill River is still under construction and traffic is reduced to one lane in each direction.

More bridge work is scheduled for two 422 bridges in West and Lower Pottsgrove Townships.

The Keim Street bridge is on the replacement list but that is some years down the road and will remain closed.
